The Second World War was, no doubt, one of the worst experiences mankind has ever faced. From torture to rape to murder, crimes against innocents were innumerous – Adolf Hitler, a diminutive man with the oratorical skills of a genius took advantage of a sensitive situation in the aftermath of Germany's defeat in the First World War and amassed enough power to bring the entire European continent to its knees. In the forefront of Hitler's troops were the Wehrmacht, which had some of the most elite, most powerful and most brutal soldiers in the world. What's sad is that at the end of the Second World War, when the Nuremberg Trials took place and most of the WW2 criminals were tried and then punished, the Wehrmacht was declared as not a criminal organization. This was because of a legal technicality and loophole that left them as simply part of the German Armed Forces. Just because they were ruled as 'not a criminal organization', it doesn't mean that they weren't criminals – there are even some who would deny that these men were war criminals, but that lies on par with those who would deny the existence of the Holocaust itself, given that there is ample evidence to prove the evil-doing of the Wehrmacht soldiers.....

Please note: this book contains special features. If you experience problems when first attempting to open the book, please force quit the Apple Books app and relaunch it, then open the book again. It should now load properly. More than 100 years have gone by since the Titanic sank. We've all heard the story of Titanic, but many recent books on the subject tend to miss out on the emotional connection - choosing instead to present a more professorial take on the subject. The result is often a book that is meaningful only to the student or historian with an intense interest in nothing but the facts. With this book, a casual, informal style is used. This allows for the facts to still be presented - even a few little-known facts, but it also gives even young readers a chance to feel intimately connected to a subject that has captured our hearts and minds for decades. This book gives an accurate and up-to-date account of every aspect of the Titanic saga, from its inception and construction to its more recent discovery and its impact on society and culture. What did Titanic's passengers eat? Why were third class passengers kept below until it was too late? Did people really believe Titanic was unsinkable? These questions and many more are explored in great detail. The author also examines what has changed since Titanic was built and speaks to the question of whether a similar disaster could happen again. Complete with a gallery of Titanic photos, relevant web links, passenger stories, and much more, this book is sure to transport the reader back in time to experience the feelings and emotions of one of the world’s most infamous disasters.

The great work of Gibbon is indispensable to the student of history. The literature of Europe offers no substitute for The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. It has obtained undisputed possession, as rightful occupant, of the vast period which it comprehends. However some subjects, which it embraces, may have undergone more complete investigation, on the general view of the whole period, this history is the sole undisputed authority to which all defer, and from which few appeal to the original writers, or to more modern compilers.

I have tried to follow as closely as possible the original, and to give the flavour of the text that Hobbes himself proof read, but the following differences were unavoidable. Hobbes used capitals and italics very extensively, for emphasis, for proper names, for quotations, and sometimes, it seems, just because. The original has very extensive margin notes, which are used to show where he introduces the definitions of words and concepts, to give in short the subject that a paragraph or section is dealing with, and to give references to his quotations, largely but not exclusively biblical.

He remembered how it had seemed to him to him, a priest sweet to die if he might die clasping unrebuked this woman in his arms. The blood throbbed in his temples as he recalled the wild thoughts that had swirled in a mad throng through his brain in those moments which had seemed like hours; the blood throbbed, too, in his wounded arm, so that a groan forced itself through his parched lips. He was constantly throwing himself to and fro as if to escape from some teasing thought, always to be by the sharp pang in his wound brought to a sense of his condition. The whole night passed in an agony of mind and body.

Genre: History
Publish Date: 27 July 2012
Publisher: Isuru Abeysinghe

Hitler's autobiographical book Mein Kampf, the official doctrine of the NAZI regime during WWII, is not a book that many would consider to read. Modern society is generally very well acquainted with Hitler and the ultimate outcome of his philosophical stances and will automatically denounce such notions based on a purely humanitarian and moral standpoint. The book remains illegal in many parts of the world (particularly Europe) and it rightfully considered one of the most powerful, destructive and divisive doctrines in modern history. While the book is often confronting in it's content it is still to my opinion an essential read because contained therein are the techniques of a master manipulator. It shows clearly that the doctrine of genocide-inducing hatred is not always - or even generally - a chaotic ramble of spiteful extremist verses but rather a considered and deliberate propagandist argument, one which at many points seems benign and even agreeable and always poses a compelling emotional narrative.

His works show an intimate knowledge of the characters, and they are written without sparing the details. The subjects are of historical importance and show the semi-lawlessness that was typical of Europe in the Middle Ages. The 'Celebrated Crimes' series were an instant hit and Dumas was inundated with suggestions of other celebrated criminals to write about.

The History of Rome (German: Römische Geschichte) is a multi-volume history of ancient Rome written by Theodor Mommsen (1817–1903). Originally published by Reimer & Hirsel, Leipzig, as three volumes during 1854-1856, the work dealt with the Roman Republic. A subsequent book was issued which concerned the provinces of the Roman Empire. Recently published was a further book on the Empire, reconstructed from lecture notes. The initial three volumes won widespread acclaim upon publication; indeed, The Roman History made Mommsen famous in a day. Still read and qualifiedly cited, it is the prolific Mommsen's most well-known work. The work was specifically cited when Mommsen was awarded the Nobel Prize.

Niccolo Machiavelli, the first great Italian historian, and one of the most eminent political writers of any age or country, was born at Florence, May 3, 1469. He was of an old though not wealthy Tuscan family, his father, who was a jurist, dying when Niccolo was sixteen years old. We know nothing of Machiavelli’s youth and little about his studies. He does not seem to have received the usual humanistic education of his time, as he knew no Greek. The first notice of Machiavelli is in 1498 when we find him holding the office of Secretary in the second Chancery of the Signoria, which office he retained till the downfall of the Florentine Republic in 1512. His unusual ability was soon recognized, and in 1500 he was sent on a mission to Louis XII. of France, and afterward on an embassy to Cæsar Borgia, the lord of Romagna, at Urbino. Machiavelli’s report and description of this and subsequent embassies to this prince, shows his undisguised admiration for the courage and cunning of Cæsar, who was a master in the application of the principles afterwards exposed in such a skillful and uncompromising manner by Machiavelli in his Prince.

Two ordinary Roman cities on the Bay of Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum would probably have been footnotes in history had it not been for the sudden and savage method of their destruction in AD79, when Vesuvius erupted with cataclysmic force. The ruins lay buried for almost 1,700 years, their treasure-trove of artefacts preserved by the ash in which they were entombed. Their rediscovery has given us a unique insight into the lives of the people of the Roman Empire, how they worked and played, loved and worshipped. Here, in association with Goldman Sachs, supporter of the British Museum exhibition, ‘Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum’ (March 28-September 29 2013), we explore life (and death) in the ancient cities.

Arthur Conan Doyle made his reputation as a novelist, but far stranger than fiction is the creator of Sherlock Holmes' tale of the Boer War in South Africa. The then 40-year-old novelist wanted to see the war first hand as a soldier, but the Victorian army balked at having a popular author wielding a pen in its ranks. The army did accept him as a doctor and Doyle was knighted in 1902 for his work with a field hospital in Bloemfontein. Doyle's vivid account of the battles is in part thanks to the eye-witness accounts he got from his patients. Doyle has thoroughly mastered the details of the campaign, and presents them in a form that can be easily understood. Furthermore, his descriptions of the various engagements are masterpieces of graphic writing.

The Tudor dynasty or House of Tudor was a series of five monarchs who ruled England and Ireland from 1485 until 1603. Nogle vikinger begyndte nemlig at skifte tro.

Of the great incidents of History, none has attracted more attention or proved more difficult of interpretation than the French Revolution. The ultimate significance of other striking events and their place in the development of mankind can be readily estimated. It is clear enough that the barbarian invasions marked the death of the classical world, already mortally wounded by the rise of Christianity. It is clear enough that the Renaissance emancipated the human intellect from the trammels of a bastard mediaevalism, that the Reformation consolidated the victory of the "new learning" by including theology among the subjects of human debate. But the French Revolution seems to defy complete analysis. Its complexity was great, its contradictions numerous and astounding. A movement ostensibly directed against despotism culminated in the establishment of a despotism far more complete than that which had been overthrown. The apostles of liberty proscribed whole classes of their fellow-citizens, drenching in innocent blood the land which they claimed to deliver from oppression. The apostles of equality established a tyranny of horror, labouring to extirpate all who had committed the sin of being fortunate. The apostles of fraternity carried fire and sword to the farthest confines of Europe, demanding that a continent should submit to the arbitrary dictation of a single people. And of the Revolution were born the most rigid of modern codes of law, that spirit of militarism which to-day has caused a world to mourn, that intolerance of intolerance which has armed anti-clerical persecutions in all lands. Nor were the actors in the drama less varied than the scenes enacted. The Revolution produced Mirabeau and Talleyrand, Robespierre and Napoleon, Sieyès and Hébert. The marshals of the First Empire, the doctrinaires of the Restoration, the journalists of the Orleanist monarchy, all were alike the children of this generation of storm and stress, of high idealism and gross brutality, of changing fortunes and glory mingled with disaster.

A highly political play, Coriolanus concerns a military hero of ancient Rome who attempts to shift from his career as a general to become a candidate for public office -- a disastrous move that leads to his collaborating with the enemy and heading an attack on Rome. Despite his battlefield confidence and accomplishments, Coriolanus proves psychologically ill-suited as a candidate for the office of consul and makes an easy scapegoat for the restless citizenry and his political opponents. The last of Shakespeare s tragedies, Coriolanus was written in approximately 1608 and derived from Plutarch s Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans.

The story of imam Hussein Part one Edited by Hussein Abbas Dedication To imam Hussein himself and all who heard about him. Summary This is ilustared history based on real events painted by many artist of different times. Imam Hussein was the son of Ali ibn Abi Ṭalib (fourth Rashidun Caliph of Sunni Islam, and first Imam of Shia Islam) and Fatimah Zahra (daughter of the Islamic prophet Muhammad) and the younger brother of Hasan ibn Ali. He is an important figure in Islam, as he is a member of the Ahl al-Bayt (the household of Muhammad) and Ahl al-Kisa, as well as being the third Shia Imam. He is highly regarded by Shia Muslims because he refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid I, the Umayyad caliph because he considered the rule of the Umayyads unjust. As a consequence, he left Medina, his home town, and traveled to Mecca. There, the people of Kufa sent letters to him, asking his help and pledging their allegiance to him. So he traveled toward Kufa. At Karbala his caravan was intercepted by Yazid's army. He was killed and beheaded in the Battle of Karbala in 680 (61 AH) by Shimr Ibn Thil-Jawshan, along with most of his family and companions. The annual memorial for him, his family, his children and his As'haab (companions) is called Ashura (tenth day of Muharram) and is a day of mourning for Shi'i Muslims. The tragedy in Karbala has had an impact on religious conscience of Muslims beyond its sacredness among Shiites. In the long term, the cruel killings at Karbala became an example of the brutality of the Umayyads and fueled the later Shiite movements. Anger at his death was turned into a rallying cry that helped undermine and ultimately overthrow the Umayyad Caliphate. This is his story in photos as the artists saw it. Hussein Abbas

A/S (or 'Weilbach' in short) was established in 1755 and this book analyses the development of the company from its founding to the present. It focuses both on the employees and the management of the company, and asks how and why the company was able to transform its business. More generally, it examines how Weilbach was able to survive and adapt to more than two and a half centuries of fundamental technological and commercial changes in the maritime world. Most maritime suppliers have proved to have far less enduring business models.

Captain Brinkley's great knowledge of Japanese life and language is admitted and admired by all. His independence of judgment is, however, weakened by his close official connection with the Japanese Government and by his personal interest in Japanese industry. His journal is regarded generally as a government mouth-piece, and he has succeeded in making himself a more vigorous advocate of the Japanese claims than even the Japanese themselves. It can safely be forecasted that whenever a dispute arises between Japanese and British interests, Captain Brinkley and his journal will play the part, through thick and thin, of defenders of the Japanese.

When we speak, in the language of our title page, of the 'Ancient Classics', we must remember that the word 'ancient' is to be taken with a considerable difference, in one sense. Ancient all the Greek and Roman authors are, as dated comparatively with our modern era. But as to the antique character of their writings, there is often a difference which is not merely one of date. Viewed in this light, the history of Thucydides, the letters and orations of Cicero, are not ancient at all.

Provides a comprehensive introduction about Korea's cultural heritage. Koreans take great pride in their cultural heritage and for ample reason. The ancient kingdoms of Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla (1st century B.C.-A.D. 7th century) produced some of the world's most outstanding Buddhist art. Goryeo, the dynasty that ruled Korea from 918 to 1392, produced inlaid celadon ceramics of impeccable beauty and the world's most comprehensive collection of Buddhist scriptures, the Tripitaka Koreana, flawlessly carved from over 80,000 woodblocks. Goryeo scholars took the art of printing still further by developing the first movable metal type, two centuries before it appeared in Europe. The monarchs of Joseon, which ruled Korea from 1392 to 1910, also supported the creation of notable firsts; a rain gauge(1441); Hangeul(1443), an alphabet so scientific that modern linguists praise its efficiency; and an ironclad battleship(late 16th century) Over their long history, Koreans have developed a vibrant culture with unique customs that can be found throughout the peninsula and in distant lands where Korean communities continue to pass down traditions. Koreans value learning and have earned a reputation for diligence and perseverance. These traits helped foster a culture well suited to the natural surroundings of a mountainous peninsula.

Genre: History
Publish Date: 12 February 2013
Publisher: John Preece

this book presents an entirely new approach to the analysis of human behaviour. there are many reasons why such a reappraisal is timely and important. although man's technological progress has been impressive, all his unresolved problems, other than disease and natural disaster, are fundamentally sociological and therefore of his own making, and their solution depends upon a more profound and more widely assimilated understanding of human motivation. as we are constantly reminded by reports in the media, the roots of human dysfunction at a personal level have persisted unchanged since the stone age, despite the inputs of philosophy, religion and politics. on the world stage, the metamorphosis being brought about by increasing globalisation, democratisation and secularisation has exposed the serious inadequacies of legacy tribal, nationalistic and religious tenets, and the uncompromising conduct to which these give rise. the key to comprehensive sociological maturation is the provision of an unbiased educational strategy which instils the ability to think logically and adroitly. since logic requires the use of prior knowledge, a core text must also be furnished which by-passes the dependence on conjectural theories so prevalent in psychological and sociological research, and reverts instead to the bedrock evidence enshrined in our history as a species, and in our prehistory as mirrored in the lives of other primates. this book should be of special interest, not only to the general reader, but to parents and prospective parents, to all those professionally tasked with coping with the vagaries of human conduct, to those seeking an intrinsically rational system of ethics, and to those who aspire, as we all should, to become enlightened global citizens. the author is a medical graduate and university research fellow.
