This is a humor book. After twelve months of agreeable toil, made easy by unprecedented success, the period has at length arrived when your high mightinesses will be able to indulge your voracious appetites by feeding and fattening on the work of death. Already does my prophetic spirit picture to itself the black cloud of cormorants, swelling and puffing in the fulness of their editorial pride, at the huge eccentric volume which has thus thrust itself into extensive circulation without the usual cringings and cravings to the pick fault tribe. Let me have good proof of your greediness to devour my labours, and I will dish up such a meal for you in my next volume, as shall go nigh to produce extermination by surfeit. One favour, alone, I crave—give me abuse enough; let no squeamish pretences of respect for my bookseller, or disguised qualms of apprehension for your own sacred persons, deter the natural inclination of your hearts. The slightest deviation from your usual course to independent writers—or one step towards commendation from your gang, might induce the public to believe I had abandoned my character, and become one of your honourable fraternity-the very suspicion of which would (to me) produce irretrievable ruin.

This is a humor book. These dying men to soothe and cheer? To do what mortal skill may do. To lighten their burdens of grief and woe; To shrive these dying souls of blame, To bid them hope in Heaven above. Who hath sent these in my dear name. To do this holiest work of love? Hath the treasure here given been paid by those. Whose 'wrongs' are so earnestly plead by you? Or hath it been done by their 'natural foes'. The wealthy, the rich, the opulent few. Of Madison Square and the Fifth Avenue? During this lengthy interrogation. The Spirit had been pretending to doze. But he waked himself up at the peroration. And most ungallantly turned up his nose. And turned on his heel, and turned him away, -- Sulkily saying, he'd Nothing to Say.

This book is a collection of reprinted articles on a wide-range of subjects, all in the unique style. Using wit, paradox, and good humor he defends a series of seeming harmless things that need no defense, and in so doing he exposes many of the broken assumptions and dogmatic notions of secular humanism and other trends of his age and of ours.

A man thinks that by marrying a woman he proves he loves her, and that therefore nothing more need ever be said about it. The average man looks on matrimony as a hitching post where he can tie a woman and leave her until he comes home nights. There is nothing so uninteresting to a a man as a contentedly married woman. A man's sweethearts are like his cigars; he has many of each of them, loves each one as tenderly as the preceding, and appreciates each according to its expensiveness.

Edward Lear - Nonsense Songs artwork Nonsense Songs
Edward Lear
Genre: Humour
Publish Date: 28 January 1888
Publisher: Public Domain
Seller: Public Domain

It is a poetry book. A nonsense song is a type of song written in fun using nonsense syllables at least in the chorus. Such a song generally has a simple melody and a quick (or fairly quick) tempo. The roots of this song type can be traced as far back as 'Shoo, Fly, Don't Bother Me' and 'Jimmy Crack Corn' to the 1890s 'Ta-ra-ra Boom-de-ay'. This last was a kind of can-can with an obvious accent on the 'boom'. Mostly it was a way of letting off steam.

This is a melody book. Lear's second collection of limericks appeared in 1872 in More Nonsense Pictures, Rhymes Botany &c., published by Robert Bush. This book, as the title suggests, contained not only limericks, but also botanies and a collection of twenty-six other 'nonsense rhymes and pictures' describing as many characters (mainly animals) so as to form an alphabet. Though the name given these is the same he used for the limericks, they are not really 'rhymes', but rather short prose descriptions.

Fables for the Frivolous is one of the earliest works by the American parodist Guy Wetmore Carryl. These fables are adapted from Jean de La Fontaine's original writings. I turned into it, and soon saw beyond the rough coast the blue ring of the ocean-- vast, silent, and splendid in the sunshine. I found a seat on the ruins of an old stone-wall, among some tangled bushes and briers. There being no Aunt Eliza to pull through the surf, and no animated bathers near, I discovered the beauty of the sea, and that I loved it. Presently I heard the steps of a horse, and, to my astonishment, Mr. Uxbridge rode past. I was glad he did not know me. I watched him as he rode slowly down the road, deep in thought. He let drop the bridle, and the horse stopped, as if accustomed to the circumstance, and pawed the ground gently, or yawed his neck for pastime. Mr. Uxbridge folded his arms and raised his head to look seaward. It seemed to me as if he were about to address the jury. I had dropped so entirely from my observance of the landscape that I jumped when he resumed the bridle and turned his horse to come back.

Good Comedies are such rare productions, that notwithstanding the wealth of our literature in the Comic element, it would not occupy us long to run over the English list. If they are brought to the test I shall propose, very reputable Comedies will be found unworthy of their station, like the ladies of Arthur’s Court when they were reduced to the ordeal of the mantle. There are plain reasons why the Comic poet is not a frequent apparition; and why the great Comic poet remains without a fellow. A society of cultivated men and women is required, wherein ideas are current and the perceptions quick, that he may be supplied with matter and an audience.
