This is a humor book. These dying men to soothe and cheer? To do what mortal skill may do. To lighten their burdens of grief and woe; To shrive these dying souls of blame, To bid them hope in Heaven above. Who hath sent these in my dear name. To do this holiest work of love? Hath the treasure here given been paid by those. Whose 'wrongs' are so earnestly plead by you? Or hath it been done by their 'natural foes'. The wealthy, the rich, the opulent few. Of Madison Square and the Fifth Avenue? During this lengthy interrogation. The Spirit had been pretending to doze. But he waked himself up at the peroration. And most ungallantly turned up his nose. And turned on his heel, and turned him away, -- Sulkily saying, he'd Nothing to Say.

This is a melody book. Lear's second collection of limericks appeared in 1872 in More Nonsense Pictures, Rhymes Botany &c., published by Robert Bush. This book, as the title suggests, contained not only limericks, but also botanies and a collection of twenty-six other 'nonsense rhymes and pictures' describing as many characters (mainly animals) so as to form an alphabet. Though the name given these is the same he used for the limericks, they are not really 'rhymes', but rather short prose descriptions.

Joseph Addison - Essays and Tales artwork Essays and Tales

The book is the sixty-fourth volume of the contains those papers from the Tatler which were especially associated with the imagined character of Isaac Bickerstaff who was the central figure in that series; and in the twenty-ninth volume there is a similar collection of papers relating to the Spectator Club and Sir Roger de Coverley who was the central figure in Steele and Addison’s Spectator. Those volumes contained no doubt some of the best essays of addison and Steele. But in the Tatler and Spectator are full armories of the wit and wisdom of these two writers who summoned into life the army of the essayists and led it on to kindly war against the forces of Ill-temper and Ignorance. Envy Hatred Malice and all their first cousins of the family of Charitableness are captains under those two commanders-in-chief and we can little afford to dismiss from the field two of the stoutest combatants against them. In this volume it is only Addison who speaks and in another volume presently to follow there will be the voice of Steele. The two friends differed in temperament and in many of the outward signs of character but these two little books will very distinctly show how wholly they agreed as to essentials. For Addison Literature had a charm of its own he delighted in distinguishing the finer graces of good style and he drew from the truths of life the principles of taste in writing.

My story opens in the classic presinks of Bostin. In the parler of a bloated aristocratic mansion on Bacon street sits a luvly young lady, whose hair is cuvered ore with the frosts of between 17 Summers. She has just sot down to the piany, and is warblin the popler ballad called Smells of the Notion, in which she tells how, with pensiv thought, she wandered by a C beat shore. The son is settin in its horizon, and its gorjus light pores in a golden meller flud through the winders, and makes the young lady twict as beautiful nor what she was before, which is onnecessary. She is magnificently dressed up in a Berage basque, with poplin trimmins, More Antique, Ball Morals and 3 ply carpeting. Also, considerable gauze. Her dress contains 16 flounders and her shoes is red morocker, with gold spangles onto them. Presently she jumps up with a wild snort, and pressin her hands to her brow, she exclaims: Methinks I see a voice.

Walter Harte - An Essay on Satire, Particularly on the Dunciad artwork An Essay on Satire, Particularly on the Dunciad
Walter Harte
Genre: Humour
Publish Date: 31 December 1773
Publisher: Public Domain
Seller: Public Domain

Since the first publication of Walter Harte's An Essay on Satire, Particularly on the Dunciad, it has reappeared more than once: the unsold sheets of the first edition were included in A Collection of Pieces in Verse and Prose, Which Have Been Publish'd on Occasion of the Dunciad (1732), and the Essay is also found in at least three late eighteenth- or early nineteenth-century collections of poetry. For several reasons, however, it makes sense to reprint the Essay again. The three collections are scarce and have forbiddingly small type; I know of no other twentieth-century reprinting; and, perhaps most important, Aubrey Williams claims that "the critical value for the Dunciad of Harte's poem has not been fully appreciated". Its value can best be substantiated, or disputed, if it is rescued from its typographical limbo in the collections and reprinted from its more attractive first edition.

WHAT! Would you cast a loving Woman hence? Thou, Fickle One, prepare for penitence! Full many a golden ducat shall you pay To drown the memory of such insolence. AND every note, that, in your cups, you write, In cold black Type, perchance shall see the light; While all the World, across its coffee urn, Shall titter gaily at the sorry sight. AH yes! For all the papers, which discussed Your wedding plans, shall turn your cake to crust, Publish your letters and your photographs, And trail your Egotism in the dust!

Her decks are crowded with excited passengers, who instantly undertake to look after their trunks and things; and what with our smashing against each other, and the yells of the porters, and the wails over lost baggage, and the crash of boxes, and the roar of the boilers, we are for the time being about as unhappy a lot of maniacs as was ever thrown together.

The Compiler of this new Jest Book is desirous to make known that it is composed mainly of old jokes, —some older than Joe Miller himself, —with a liberal sprinkling of new jests gathered from books and hearsay. In the course of his researches he has been surprised to find how many Jests, Impromptus, and Repartees have passed current, century after century, until their original utterer is lost in the "mist of ages"; a Good Joke being transferred from one reputed Wit to another, thus resembling certain rare Wines which are continually being rebottled but are never consumed.

On the surface, the poem describes Dante's travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven; but at a deeper level, it represents, allegorically, the soul's journey towards God. At this deeper level, Dante draws on medieval Christian theology and philosophy, especially Thomistic philosophy and the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas. Consequently, the Divine Comedy has been called "the Summa in verse".
