This is a famous but very controversial piece by Bertrand Russell. It was a lecture delivered in 1927 at National Secular Society, London. Later in 1957 it was part of a book with the same title and reached international fame. He examines one by one several highly regarded arguments for the existence (or necessity) of God. His main point however is the possibility of morality based on another principle than God. It is quite a challenging reading and one we must all face, regardless of our belief or lack of it, thereof. Enjoy!

This amazing novel marks the dividing line between nineteenth- and twentieth-century fiction, and between the visions of self each century embodied. One of the most remarkable characters in literature, the unnamed narrator is a former official who has defiantly withdrawn into an underground existence. In full retreat from society, he scrawls a passionate, obsessive, self-contradictory narrative that serves as a devastating attack on social utopianism and an assertion of man’s essentially irrational nature. Read it now!

As a society, we are fascinated by crime. It is something that dominates our interest, given the high viewership and ratings for shows such as Law & Order and Criminal Minds . We remain highly interested not only in the way the crime is committed, and then solved, but also in the psyche of the criminal. What possibly could have forced them to commit their crime? What was the impulse behind their actions? Was it that they had faced some abuse in the past? Were they pure evil? These are the questions the public struggles with. In this book, we will talk about not of any crime such as tearing a parking ticket, but serious crimes that shook the fabric of society when they were discovered. They were crimes of such magnitudes that we as a society couldn’t believe someone could have descended to such depths. They went against every core belief that we hold strictly as the prerogative of humanity.

How are serial killers made? Perhaps, if someone could answer this question, then the police and the community would be able to prevent people from killing in the first place. As it is, this question remains unanswered though many different hypothesis are put forward by the experts. Until a method for preventing crimes before they are committed is developed then all the authorities can do is be reactive in the case of serial killers. This is of course exactly what plays into the hands of those who commit such heinous crimes. Being a concerned citizen though is certainly a weapon that we can all employ in the fight against serial killers. In this book, you will discover 7 killers who stopped at nothing to feel invincible. From those that had problems in their childhood to those that had a loving parent. Those that had a certain incident that set them off to those that just did it to see if they could get away with it – not all serial killers can be pigeon holed unfortunately for law enforcement officials.

The famous imaginary philosophical conversation taking place in the café de la Regence, where Moi ("Me"), a narrator-like persona (often mistakenly supposed to stand for Diderot himself), describes for the reader a recent encounter he's had with the character Lui ("Him"), referring to — yet not literally meaning — Jean-François Rameau, the nephew of the famous composer, who's engaged him in an intricate battle of wits, self-reflexivity, allegory and allusion. Recurring themes in the discussion include the Querelle des Bouffons (the French/Italian opera battle), education of children, the nature of genius and money. The often rambling conversation pokes fun at numerous prominent figures of the time.

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche - Beyond Good and Evil artwork Beyond Good and Evil
Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche
Genre: Philosophy
Publish Date: 30 December 1899
Publisher: Public Domain
Seller: Public Domain

Beyond Good and Evil is a book by the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. It takes up and expands on the ideas of his previous work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, but approached from a more critical, polemical direction. In Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche accuses past philosophers of lacking critical sense and blindly accepting Judeo-Christian premises in their consideration of morality. The work moves into the realm "beyond good and evil" in the sense of leaving behind the traditional morality which Nietzsche subjects to a destructive critique in favor of what he regards as an affirmative approach that fearlessly confronts the perspectivistic nature of knowledge and the perilous condition of the modern individual. In it he exposes the deficiencies of those usually called "philosophers" and identifies the qualities of the "new philosophers" imagination, self-assertion, danger, originality, and the "creation of values".

It details Thoreau’s life for two years, two months, and two days around the shores of Walden Pond. Walden is neither a novel nor a true autobiography, but a social critique of the Western World, with each chapter heralding some aspect of humanity that needed to be either renounced or praised. Along with his critique of the civilized world, Thoreau examines other issues afflicting man in society, ranging from economy and reading to solitude and higher laws. He also takes time to talk about the experience at Walden Pond itself, commenting on the animals and the way people treated him for living there, using those experiences to bring out his philosophical positions.

Boston's Most Notorious Gangster and the Pursuit of Justice

Genre: True Crime
Publish Date: 10 November 2013
Publisher: WBUR
Seller: WBUR

The trial of James “Whitey” Bulger this summer was supposed to bring an end to one of the greatest scandals in the history of the FBI, but it dredged up a toxic swamp instead. Horrific crimes, depraved witnesses and sordid accounts of FBI agents who gave their allegiance to the mob boss emerged from the muck as families of 19 murder victims endured the presentation of broken skulls and jaws along with photos from the morgue. At center stage was the defendant, who had been listed and protected by the FBI as a secret informant. He claimed the government had given him a free pass, but prosecutors fought to keep the trial away from questions of who made Bulger what he became and how. In an extraordinary measure of their outrage, the families of the victims cheered Bulger’s own attorneys as they savaged the government’s “cover-up” and the deals prosecutors had given to Bulger’s former associates to win testimony. In the first book to explore the trial in a larger context, WBUR investigative reporter David Boeri weaves his daily trial dispatches into the complete backstory of Bulger’s ruthless ascent to power, the men and the agency who made that possible, and the families of victims who were victimized again and again by the government’s protection of the killer. Boeri’s storytelling is informed by 26 years of national award-winning reporting on the Bulger case. He aggressively dug into FBI corruption and tracked the Bureau’s delayed, often inept search for the 16-year fugitive. Years before Bulger was arrested in Santa Monica, Bulger travelled to California to follow his own tips in search of Whitey and showed the lack of FBI effort and enterprise. His investigation of crimes aided and abetted by FBI agents took Boeri to old murder scenes of Bulger victims in Oklahoma, Florida and Massachusetts. He followed detectives in the difficult and painful search for the bones of Bulger victims long ago buried. He sought out the families to learn what they had endured and sought out Bulger’s criminal associates even tracked some down who were in the Witness Protection Program to chronicle Bulger the boss and Bulger the killer. In “Bulger On Trial,” Boeri brings the reader into the same close contact with Bulger’s corrupt FBI handler, the younger brother who made a parallel rise to political power, the families, the criminals and the saga that links them all.

Publisher: The Project Gutenberg

A Doll's House is a three-act play in prose by Henrik Ibsen. It premiered at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 21 December 1879, having been published earlier that month. The play is significant for its critical attitude toward 19th century marriage norms. It aroused great controversy at the time, as it concludes with the protagonist, Nora, leaving her husband and children because she wants to discover herself. Ibsen was inspired by the belief that "a woman cannot be herself in modern society," since it is "an exclusively male society, with laws made by men and with prosecutors and judges who assess feminine conduct from a masculine standpoint." Its ideas can also be seen as having a wider application: Michael Meyer argues that the play's theme is not women's rights, but rather "the need of every individual to find out the kind of person he or she really is and to strive to become that person." In a speech given to the Norwegian Association for Women's Rights in 1898, Ibsen insisted that he "must disclaim the honor of having consciously worked for the women's rights movement," since he wrote "without any conscious thought of making propaganda," his task having been "the description of humanity."

All natural phenomena affect the activities of man. It has been repeatedly observed that the number of crimes of assault and murder increases in the summer months and fluctuates with extreme heat or a cooler temperature. The nervous system of man is responsive to all sorts of physical and psychological influences, and criminologists take these into account in considering crime, as doctors take them into account in treating disease. Man is influenced by substantially all the things that affect other structures and by many things that do not.

In this interesting piece; the author argues that Richard Dawkins has failed in his attempts to put a good rational argument for atheism. The professor uses the rather feeble approach of setting up straw men only to dismantle them with great relish. These repeated mischaracterizations of faith do the atheist camp no favours. All it does is betray a vitriolic personal agenda. It is argued that The God delusion has helped to perpetuate two major modern myths. First that religion and science contradict each other and second that Theists are unthinking drones. If Aristotle, Augustine, Plotinus, Aquinas, Descartes, Kant, Einstein, Collins and thousands of other genius's are unthinking drones -this would make Richard Dawkins intelligence amoeba like. A rational case for Theism is proposed.

Poet-Philosopher and Zen Priest Tai Sheridan's Wheel of Life Mantra is a poetic expression of the Bhavacakra, an ancient mandala that presents the most significant wisdom teachings of Buddhism. It is used to contemplate the causes and conditions of suffering, and as a guide to non-dual wisdom, loving kindness, compassion, and equanimity. The Wheel is constructed of four concentric circles around a hub, each circle representing different areas of human experience and awareness. Beginning with the innermost circle and moving outward they represent dimensions of anguish, consequences, psychological experience, and the workings of consciousness. The wheel itself is an expression of the essential Buddhist teachings of no-self (nothing exists as a separate entity), impermanence (everything changes), and co-dependent origination (all phenomena arise simultaneously in reality in the present moment). The Wheel, like all Buddhist teachings, is an encouragement for finding the way to peace, love, and light.

The classic school, which looks upon the crime as a juridical problem, occupies itself with its name, its definition, its juridical analysis, leaves the personality of the criminal in the background and remembers it only so far as exceptional circumstances explicitly stated in the law books refer to it: whether he is a minor, a deaf-mute, whether it is a case of insanity, whether he was drunk at the time the crime was committed.

Conviction is a very important part of providing justice. When a crime has been committed, it is essential for the perpetrator to be punished. In that way, although the family of the victims won’t always be able to make sense of what happened, they will still understand that nobody is above the law. Publicizing the criminal’s modus operandi is sometimes good - the citizens will be well aware of their tactics and they can take better care of themselves. On the other hand, it can also be bad, because “would be” criminals and serial killers are also watching and they might like the idea. Such was the case of Eddie Seda. Other than him, 4 others wreaked havoc in different places, at various times: There was the man who killed prostitutes in his own home (with his family in it), a man who claimed to have killed 600 hundred women when only 3 victims were verified, a father who brought his son to “hunt” some humans, and a husband who killed his wife when she learned of his lies. How did they do it? And how did the law authorities catch them?

The strangest figure that meets us in the annals of Oriental thought is that of Confucius. To the popular mind he is the founder of a religion, and yet he has nothing in common with the great religious teachers of the East. We think of Siddartha, the founder of Buddhism, as the very impersonation of romantic asceticism, enthusiastic self-sacrifice, and faith in the things that are invisible. Zoroaster is the friend of God, talking face to face with the Almighty, and drinking wisdom and knowledge from the lips of Omniscience. Mohammed is represented as snatched up into heaven, where he receives the Divine communication which he is bidden to propagate with fire and sword throughout the world. These great teachers lived in an atmosphere of the supernatural. They spoke with the authority of inspired prophets. They brought the unseen world close to the minds of their disciples. They spoke positively of immortality, of reward or punishment beyond the grave. The present life they despised, the future was to them everything in its promised satisfaction. The teachings of Confucius were of a very different sort. Throughout his whole writings he has not even mentioned the name of God. He declined to discuss the question of immortality. When he was asked about spiritual beings, he remarked, “If we cannot even know men, how can we know spirits?”

In this, we have the answer to our first question: How does the believer in the new faith picture his heaven?.

These things are the test of equality. Shorter Prose Pieces By Oscar Wilde Phrases and Philosophies for the use of the young - shorter prose pieces. The first duty in life is to be as artificial as possible. What the second duty is no one has as yet discovered. Wickedness is a myth invented by good people to account for the curious attractiveness of others. If the poor only had profiles there would be no difficulty in solving the problem of poverty. Those who see any difference between soul and body have neither. A really well-made buttonhole is the only link between Art and Nature. Religions die when they are proved to be true. Science is the record of dead religions. The well-bred contradict other people. Cobb's introduction contains a detailed summary of the entire dialogue, clarifying the main themes and the general structure. He offers a fresh interpretation of the dialogue that shows how each theme contributes to the exploration of the nature of, and the relation between, philosophy and sophistry.

Among Plato's later dialogues, the Parmenides is one of the most significant. In this book, Allen provides a superb translation of the Parmenides along with a structural analysis that proceeds on the assumption that formal elements, logical and dramatic, are important to its interpretation and that the argument of the Parmenides is aporetic, a statement of metaphysical perplexities

In this book, Aristotle offers an account of what he calls "poetry" (a term which in Greek literally means "making" and in this context includes drama—comedy, tragedy, and the satyr play—as well as lyric poetry, epic poetry, and the dithyramb-A song sung to praise Dionysus, the God of wine and fertility).

Bundled with the Fear Psychology thesis is a review paper entitled “A Century of Psychoanalysis”, which discusses an old psychology that has not yet expired. It introduced ideas that were radical and alarming at a time when sexual matters were not for public discussion, but what was probably more alarming was the concept of 'unconscious' motivation of behavior. This aspect of the theory tends to have been forgotten or ignored.

The dialogue reflects contemporary controversies on the method of definition; but its logical exercises and the impressive myth of the two cosmic eras serve to bring out its essential political teaching. The Statesman is Plato's neglected political work, but it is crucial for an understanding of the development of his political thinking.

Beyond Good and Evil: Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future is a book by philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, first published in 1886. It draws on and expands the ideas of his previous work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, but with a more critical and polemical approach. In Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche accuses past philosophers of lacking critical sense and blindly accepting dogmatic premises in their consideration of morality. Specifically, he accuses them of founding grand metaphysical systems upon the faith that the good man is the opposite of the evil man, rather than just a different expression of the same basic impulses that find more direct expression in the evil man. The work moves into the realm "beyond good and evil" in the sense of leaving behind the traditional morality which Nietzsche subjects to a destructive critique in favour of what he regards as an affirmative approach that fearlessly confronts the perspectival nature of knowledge and the perilous condition of the modern individual.

This selection of his writings on religion, ethics, politics, women and many other themes is taken from Schopenhauer's last work, Parerga and Paralipomena. He depicts humanity as locked in a struggle beyond good and evil, each individual absolutely free within a Godless world in which art, morality and self-awareness are our only salvation. This innovative and pessimistic view proved powerfully influential upon philosophy and art.

The thought of the prolific 19th century Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) continues to interest and impress many. Kierkegaard has been interpreted and re-interpreted over the decades; as a devout Lutheran, an existentialist, a postmodern prophet, and many more. His works have exerted a tremendous influence on contemporary thought. Kierkegaard is well known for his aesthetic "pseudonymous" works, such as Either/Or, Fear and Trembling, Philosophical Fragments, and The Concept of Anxiety, and these works claim a pseudonym as its author. Accompanying these works, however, Kierkegaard authored several ethical-religious discourses written under his own name, as well as longer sustained ones in his later work. He called them discourses not sermons because Kierkegaard believes he has no authority to preach; but only to help others enlighten or 'edify' or 'upbuild' themselves. Kierkegaard's aim for these discourses was to make his readers aware of the religiousness of Christianity. The first discouse, "Man's Need of God Constitutes his Highest Perfection" examines the nature of faith, God’s gifts and prayer. The discourse was written and published in August 1844, a few months after The Concept of Anxiety. "What it Means to Seek God: On the Occasion of a Confessional Service" examines wonder, stillness, and seeking God. The discourse was written and published in April 1845, a day before the publication of Stages on Life's Way. Scholars contend that this discourse is a complement to Stages' "In Vino Veritas" banquet speech on erotic love.

“False Conviction puts the criminal justice system under the microscope and reveals its flaws in shocking detail.” John Grisham From Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist Jim Dwyer comes False Conviction , a collection of gripping true stories about innocent people convicted for crimes they did not commit. In an extraordinary multi-media production discover how justice can go wrong. “Jim Dwyer’s new book is a revelation. I feel I’ve not only seen the future, but am immersed in the details of these tragic cases of false convictions.” Ken Burns Vivid interactive features invite you to experience first-hand the ordinary ways such shocking mistakes can happen. Can we trust our memory of events? How unbiased are we? Is forensic science as reliable as we think it is? Based on a groundbreaking collaboration between the Innocence Project and the New York Hall of Science and published by award-winning app producer Touch Press, False Conviction explores how the revolutionary science of DNA testing has changed the very definition of “hard evidence.” False Conviction investigates life and death cases where DNA evidence played a crucial role in establishing the truth. In this new light, the types of proof that the criminal justice system has relied on for decades – eyewitnesses, confessions, even crime lab tests – are revealed as far more fallible than previously believed. The book carefully examines what should and shouldn’t be considered “scientific” evidence. And with guidance from leading experts including homicide detectives, cognitive psychologists, witnesses who discovered their mistakes, and wrongly convicted people, False Conviction shows us how we can – and must – do better. “ False Conviction puts the criminal justice system under the microscope and reveals its flaws in shocking detail. Through compelling writing and interactive features that transport you to crime scenes, court rooms and cutting edge science labs, Pulitzer-winning author Jim Dwyer and the imaginative book makers at Touch Press illustrate through heartbreaking cases of wrongful convictions why the system fails and how science is helping to restore justice.” John Grisham “Jim Dwyer’s new book is a revelation. I feel I’ve not only seen the future, but am immersed in the details of these tragic cases of false convictions. Dwyer has a legitimate moral outrage and a superb journalistic conscience, which together with this exciting hands-on technology, puts the reader into the heart of the dilemma, reviewing documents and evidence, pouring over photographs, hearing from the experts. The cumulative effect is stunning and infuriating.” Ken Burns

Ethics-Part One focuses on the ultimate ground of all being, i.e., God. God is not the God of classical theism. The Protagoras, like several of the Dialogues , is put into the mouth of Socrates, who describes a conversation which had taken place between himself and the great Sophist at the house of Callias. Lombardo and Bell have translated this important early dialogue on virtue, wisdom, and the nature of Sophistic teaching into an idiom remarkable for its liveliness and subtlety. Michael Frede has provided a substantial introduction that illuminates the dialogue's perennial interest, its Athenian political background, and the particular difficulties and ironic nuances of its argument.
