It details Thoreau’s life for two years, two months, and two days around the shores of Walden Pond. Walden is neither a novel nor a true autobiography, but a social critique of the Western World, with each chapter heralding some aspect of humanity that needed to be either renounced or praised. Along with his critique of the civilized world, Thoreau examines other issues afflicting man in society, ranging from economy and reading to solitude and higher laws. He also takes time to talk about the experience at Walden Pond itself, commenting on the animals and the way people treated him for living there, using those experiences to bring out his philosophical positions.

In the backdrop of the then prevailing ideologies of communism and capitalist democracy, the second successor of the Ahmadiyya Movement, Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad, addressed this lecture to the Ahmadiyya Annual Gathering on December 28, 1942. The address answers the question, 'How does Ahmadiyyat, the True Islam, propose to deal with the grave problem of socio-economic inequality in the world?' The Ahmadiyya solution is the solution of Islam shaped under divine guidance for present needs by the Holy Founder(as) of the Ahmadiyya movement. The speaker examines and analyses the role played by different movements to alleviate poverty and sufferings, such as, Socialism, International Socialism, Marxism, Bolshevism, Nazism and Fascism and so on. The speaker also, explores the major religions of the world regarding the basic question "social inequality a serious problem." Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the Promised Messiah and Mahdi, the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, laid down the foundations of the New World Order, by initiating the scheme of Wasiyyat based on Islamic teachings and under the Divine guidance in his book 'Al-Wassiyat' written in 1905. Later in 1934 Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad(ra) inaugurated Tahrik-e-Jadid to prepare the ground for the full implementation of the New World Order of the institution of Wasiyyat. In the present lecture he elaborates the aims and objectives of Tahrik-e-Jadid and claims that the New World Order in all its aspects, economic, social and religious, as introduced by Nizam-e-Wassiyat, will at the end prevail and a new and genuine revolution will take place.

"The world at it’s currently run relies on the assumption that each and every member of the earth’s population believe in three fundamental ideas: money, nationality and status. These three concepts have one thing in common: they only exist in our imaginations. Not everyone recognises these concepts as valid, but officially we all do. As far as the media are concerned, the non-existence of these three works of fiction is the greatest taboo of our time. They’re taken for granted in the same way volcanoes are taken for granted. They’re part of our world, and out of our control. Now is the time for questions. Where did these beliefs come from? Why are they here? And how do we get rid of them?"

With authority granted by the work we have been carrying on as well as by live testimonials of successful experiments, we are able to affirm that the aesthetic pleasure experienced by the individual, as he realizes that he possesses inner resources which exceed all that the he may have imagined about a better life, is much more intense than the one derived from the joys of material life, including short-lived personal pleasures and satisfactions. It is understood that primarily these congnitions should be of interest to the young, since they are still undergoing the process of mental, psychological and spiritual formation. However, parents, guardians, and teachers should contribute with their knowledge, pointing out the advantages of conducting this authentic inner investigation meant to further man’s self-improvement and to bring about the revival of this self-confidence. Logosophy is a creative science and the holder of concrete cognitions for one’s life, all of which lead to individual achievements when consciously applied to one’s ownpsychology. In short, we have opened the doors to an unprecedented and fecund investigation while displaying the results obtained through the study and practice of the cognitions that make up this new and long-awaited science for man’s immediate, positive, integral, and conscious self-improvement. From all that has been expressed, one will surely note the importance of the logosophical conception in furthering the re-evaluation of human conditions and in achieving thorough self-knowledge.

What is it about sitting round a campfire with friends that makes us want to tell scary stories? Is it that being out there in the woods adds an extra frisson of excitement to stories that might not seem half so frightening if they were told in the security of our homes? Or is it just that people have enjoyed scaring their friends for as long as there have been humans and campfires? You’ll read here about the kind of places you really, really don’t want to pitch your tent – a haunted ghost town in the US, the most haunted village in England and a forest that’s haunted by a whole range of different entities. You’ll also read about the murder of campers or people in forests both solved and unsolved. Finally, you’ll read the completely unsettling story of nine, healthy, happy young Russian campers who settled down in their tent one night in the Ural Mountains. By the time that the sun came up next morning, they were all dead and to this day, no-one knows precisely what killed them… So, throw another log on the fire and move a little closer because I think I can hear something moving out there, in the darkness under the trees. Are you ready? Then let’s tell some scary campfire stories…

Beyond Good and Evil is a book by the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. It takes up and expands on the ideas of his previous work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, but approached from a more critical, polemical direction. In Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche accuses past philosophers of lacking critical sense and blindly accepting Judeo-Christian premises in their consideration of morality. The work moves into the realm "beyond good and evil" in the sense of leaving behind the traditional morality which Nietzsche subjects to a destructive critique in favor of what he regards as an affirmative approach that fearlessly confronts the perspectivistic nature of knowledge and the perilous condition of the modern individual. In it he exposes the deficiencies of those usually called "philosophers" and identifies the qualities of the "new philosophers" imagination, self-assertion, danger, originality, and the "creation of values".

An examination on the cold, hard realities of maintaining power, Machiavelli's The Prince is both a meditation on history and a philosophical guide to politics. Machiavelli examines the successes and failures of all sorts of societies, criticizing the idealized concept of a morally pure leader in favor of a more realist approach. But is it really encouraging amorality, or is it a satire against the abuse of power? Rarely has a book been interpreted in so many contradictory ways and yet remained so influential.

A Message From The Author Love is the most natural emotion of all. I’m not here to fix you, give you advice or tell you what to do. I’ve compiled this mini book to benefit me! Reaffirming the essence of what a more unconditional love really feels like has enhanced my life incredibly, opened my heart wider than I ever thought possible and renewed every relationship I’ve ever had, especially the relationship I have with myself! I found inner fulfilment beyond my wildest dreams. I now know a real, a lasting and a sustainable love. I didn’t have to carefully choose the right mate or change the one I had. I didn’t need my kids to behave or to get them to see things my way. I didn’t have to forgive my parents or wait until they treated me better. I didn’t need to do anything differently or to ask anyone else to agree with me. It was much easier than that … “I just slightly changed my thoughts about what real love means!” On the following pages are just a few simple words that when you read them, might soothe you into feeling a little bit better too, they might bring more clarity to your mind, they might open your heart wider and they just might take you even closer, to where you really want to go. “Enjoy!”

A Doll's House is a three-act play in prose by Henrik Ibsen. It premiered at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 21 December 1879, having been published earlier that month. The play is significant for its critical attitude toward 19th century marriage norms. It aroused great controversy at the time, as it concludes with the protagonist, Nora, leaving her husband and children because she wants to discover herself. Ibsen was inspired by the belief that "a woman cannot be herself in modern society," since it is "an exclusively male society, with laws made by men and with prosecutors and judges who assess feminine conduct from a masculine standpoint." Its ideas can also be seen as having a wider application: Michael Meyer argues that the play's theme is not women's rights, but rather "the need of every individual to find out the kind of person he or she really is and to strive to become that person." In a speech given to the Norwegian Association for Women's Rights in 1898, Ibsen insisted that he "must disclaim the honor of having consciously worked for the women's rights movement," since he wrote "without any conscious thought of making propaganda," his task having been "the description of humanity."

Wilde did not see kindness or altruism per se as a problem; what worried him was its misapplication in a way which leaves unaddressed the roots of the problem: "the altruistic virtues have really prevented the carrying out of this aim. Just as the worst slave-owners were those who were kind to their slaves, and so prevented the horror of the system being realised by those who suffered from it, and understood by those who contemplated it, so, in the present state of things in England, the people who do most harm are the people who try to do most good" while preserving the system.

All natural phenomena affect the activities of man. It has been repeatedly observed that the number of crimes of assault and murder increases in the summer months and fluctuates with extreme heat or a cooler temperature. The nervous system of man is responsive to all sorts of physical and psychological influences, and criminologists take these into account in considering crime, as doctors take them into account in treating disease. Man is influenced by substantially all the things that affect other structures and by many things that do not.

The Prince (Italian: Il Principe, [il ˈprin.tʃi.pe]) is a political treatise by the Italian diplomat, historian and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli. From correspondence a version appears to have been distributed in 1513, using a Latin title, De Principatibus (About Principalities). However, the printed version was not published until 1532, five years after Machiavelli's death. This was done with the permission of the Medici pope Clement VII, but "long before then, in fact since the first appearance of the Prince, in manuscript, controversy had swirled about his writings".

The Problems of Philosophy (1912) is one of Bertrand Russell's attempts to create a brief and accessible guide to the problems of philosophy. Focusing on problems he believes will provoke positive and constructive discussion, Russell concentrates on knowledge rather than metaphysics: If it is uncertain that external objects exist, how can we then have knowledge of them but by probability. There is no reason to doubt the existence of external objects simply because of sense data. Russell guides the reader through his famous 1910 distinction between "knowledge by acquaintance and knowledge by description" and introduces important theories of Plato, Aristotle, René Descartes, David Hume, John Locke, Immanuel Kant, G. W. F. Hegel and others to lay the foundation for philosophical inquiry by general readers and scholars alike.

Poet-Philosopher and Zen Priest Tai Sheridan's Wheel of Life Mantra is a poetic expression of the Bhavacakra, an ancient mandala that presents the most significant wisdom teachings of Buddhism. It is used to contemplate the causes and conditions of suffering, and as a guide to non-dual wisdom, loving kindness, compassion, and equanimity. The Wheel is constructed of four concentric circles around a hub, each circle representing different areas of human experience and awareness. Beginning with the innermost circle and moving outward they represent dimensions of anguish, consequences, psychological experience, and the workings of consciousness. The wheel itself is an expression of the essential Buddhist teachings of no-self (nothing exists as a separate entity), impermanence (everything changes), and co-dependent origination (all phenomena arise simultaneously in reality in the present moment). The Wheel, like all Buddhist teachings, is an encouragement for finding the way to peace, love, and light.

The classic school, which looks upon the crime as a juridical problem, occupies itself with its name, its definition, its juridical analysis, leaves the personality of the criminal in the background and remembers it only so far as exceptional circumstances explicitly stated in the law books refer to it: whether he is a minor, a deaf-mute, whether it is a case of insanity, whether he was drunk at the time the crime was committed.

In writing he was clear and to the point; his practical mind made his work interesting. His "Anabasis" is a true story as delightful as a fiction; his "Cyropaedia" is a fiction full of truths. He wrote "Hellenica, " that carried on the history of Greece from the point at which Thucydides closed his history until the battle of Mantineia. He wrote a dialogue between Hiero and Simonides upon the position of a king, and dealt with the administration of the little realm of a man's household in his "OEconomicus, " a dialogue between Socrates and Critobulus, which includes the praise of agriculture.

Whatever the unpleasantness of circumstances, however disagreeable the conduct of others, you must learn to receive them with a perfect calm and without any disturbing reaction. These things are the test of equality. It is easy to be calm and equal when things go well and people and circumstances are pleasant; it is when they are the opposite that the completeness of the calm, peace, equality can be tested, reinforced, made perfect."  - SRI AUROBINDO

The strangest figure that meets us in the annals of Oriental thought is that of Confucius. To the popular mind he is the founder of a religion, and yet he has nothing in common with the great religious teachers of the East. We think of Siddartha, the founder of Buddhism, as the very impersonation of romantic asceticism, enthusiastic self-sacrifice, and faith in the things that are invisible. Zoroaster is the friend of God, talking face to face with the Almighty, and drinking wisdom and knowledge from the lips of Omniscience. Mohammed is represented as snatched up into heaven, where he receives the Divine communication which he is bidden to propagate with fire and sword throughout the world. These great teachers lived in an atmosphere of the supernatural. They spoke with the authority of inspired prophets. They brought the unseen world close to the minds of their disciples. They spoke positively of immortality, of reward or punishment beyond the grave. The present life they despised, the future was to them everything in its promised satisfaction. The teachings of Confucius were of a very different sort. Throughout his whole writings he has not even mentioned the name of God. He declined to discuss the question of immortality. When he was asked about spiritual beings, he remarked, “If we cannot even know men, how can we know spirits?”

A corpse is a pleasant thought for a worm, and a worm is a dreadful thought for every living creature. Worms fancy their kingdom of heaven in a fat body; professors of philosophy seek theirs in rummaging among Schopenhauer's entrails, and as long as rodents exist, there will exist a heaven for rodents. In this, we have the answer to our first question: How does the believer in the new faith picture his heaven?.

It is very difficult for someone who has not experienced the terror of an abusive relationship to comprehend such a life. Those on the outside listen to the horror stories of emergency room visits, terrifying ordeals in the middle of the night, and frightened children forced to witness the violence. And sooner or later, one of the most commonly asked questions is verbalized. "If things are so bad, why don't you just leave?" Has that question ever crossed your mind? You may have a friend or family member who has finally mustered the courage to tell you physical violence has been an ongoing reality in her marriage. She tries to communicate her fears of further injury, her concerns for the safety of the children, and her anxieties about leaving. You pray with her, counsel her to seek safety, and do your best to provide resources to assist. Yet you encounter a puzzling and continual hesitation. What's going on? "Why Women Stay in Abusive Relationships" was written to answer such questions. Contained within its pages are some of the typical reasons women are so reluctant to leave an abusive relationship. While by no means an exhaustive list, the book does provide those on the outside with a glimpse into the world of relationship violence. And by understanding the complexities of the struggles battered women face, readers will be better equipped to offer insightful, compassionate, and effective counsel and intercession.

Shorter Prose Pieces By Oscar Wilde Phrases and Philosophies for the use of the young - shorter prose pieces. The first duty in life is to be as artificial as possible. What the second duty is no one has as yet discovered. Wickedness is a myth invented by good people to account for the curious attractiveness of others. If the poor only had profiles there would be no difficulty in solving the problem of poverty. Those who see any difference between soul and body have neither. A really well-made buttonhole is the only link between Art and Nature. Religions die when they are proved to be true. Science is the record of dead religions. The well-bred contradict other people. This selection of his writings on religion, ethics, politics, women and many other themes is taken from Schopenhauer's last work, Parerga and Paralipomena. He depicts humanity as locked in a struggle beyond good and evil, each individual absolutely free within a Godless world in which art, morality and self-awareness are our only salvation. This innovative and pessimistic view proved powerfully influential upon philosophy and art.

Beyond Good and Evil: Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future is a book by philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, first published in 1886. It draws on and expands the ideas of his previous work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, but with a more critical and polemical approach. In Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche accuses past philosophers of lacking critical sense and blindly accepting dogmatic premises in their consideration of morality. Specifically, he accuses them of founding grand metaphysical systems upon the faith that the good man is the opposite of the evil man, rather than just a different expression of the same basic impulses that find more direct expression in the evil man. The work moves into the realm "beyond good and evil" in the sense of leaving behind the traditional morality which Nietzsche subjects to a destructive critique in favour of what he regards as an affirmative approach that fearlessly confronts the perspectival nature of knowledge and the perilous condition of the modern individual.

A comparison of religion, philosophy and magick throughout history. Are all religions basically the same? What are the similarities between the New Age, Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism, Mormonism and the Jehovah’s Witnesses? What do paganism and Gnostic Christianity have in common? Is secular humanism really superior to “mere religion” or just another means to the same end? Is there any truly original supernatural philosophy? What sets it apart from current religious practice? Is there a way to find Truth and contentment?

The thought of the prolific 19th century Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) continues to interest and impress many. Kierkegaard has been interpreted and re-interpreted over the decades; as a devout Lutheran, an existentialist, a postmodern prophet, and many more. His works have exerted a tremendous influence on contemporary thought. Kierkegaard is well known for his aesthetic "pseudonymous" works, such as Either/Or, Fear and Trembling, Philosophical Fragments, and The Concept of Anxiety, and these works claim a pseudonym as its author. Accompanying these works, however, Kierkegaard authored several ethical-religious discourses written under his own name, as well as longer sustained ones in his later work. He called them discourses not sermons because Kierkegaard believes he has no authority to preach; but only to help others enlighten or 'edify' or 'upbuild' themselves. Kierkegaard's aim for these discourses was to make his readers aware of the religiousness of Christianity. The first discouse, "Man's Need of God Constitutes his Highest Perfection" examines the nature of faith, God’s gifts and prayer. The discourse was written and published in August 1844, a few months after The Concept of Anxiety. "What it Means to Seek God: On the Occasion of a Confessional Service" examines wonder, stillness, and seeking God. The discourse was written and published in April 1845, a day before the publication of Stages on Life's Way. Scholars contend that this discourse is a complement to Stages' "In Vino Veritas" banquet speech on erotic love.

As a society, we are fascinated by crime. It is something that dominates our interest, given the high viewership and ratings for shows such as Law & Order and Criminal Minds . We remain highly interested not only in the way the crime is committed, and then solved, but also in the psyche of the criminal. What possibly could have forced them to commit their crime? What was the impulse behind their actions? Was it that they had faced some abuse in the past? Were they pure evil? These are the questions the public struggles with. In this book, we will talk about not of any crime such as tearing a parking ticket, but serious crimes that shook the fabric of society when they were discovered. They were crimes of such magnitudes that we as a society couldn’t believe someone could have descended to such depths. They went against every core belief that we hold strictly as the prerogative of humanity.

Ethics-Part One focuses on the ultimate ground of all being, i.e., God. God is not the God of classical theism. Instead, it is the only 'substance' in the universe and contains all other things in terms of its 'attributes' as 'modes'. Thus we do not have independent existence, but exist as modes of God.

The Protagoras, like several of the Dialogues , is put into the mouth of Socrates, who describes a conversation which had taken place between himself and the great Sophist at the house of Callias. Lombardo and Bell have translated this important early dialogue on virtue, wisdom, and the nature of Sophistic teaching into an idiom remarkable for its liveliness and subtlety. Michael Frede has provided a substantial introduction that illuminates the dialogue's perennial interest, its Athenian political background, and the particular difficulties and ironic nuances of its argument.

The ordinary reader will probably be somewhat surprised to discover in the aphorisms of the ancient Greeks and Hindus several close parallels to the doctrines of the Old and New Testaments, and he will have reasoned justly if he conclude that the so-called "heathens" could have derived their spiritual light only from the same Source as that which inspired the Hebrew prophets and the Christian apostles.

Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion is a philosophical work. Through dialogue, three philosophers named Demea, Philo, and Cleanthes debate the nature of God's existence. While all three agree that god exists, they differ sharply in opinion on God's nature or attributes and how, or if, humankind can come to knowledge of a deity.

Poet-Philosopher and Zen Priest Tai Sheridan's Warm Zen is an easy to read and understand poetic interpretation of Dogen's complex philosophical essay 'Bendowa'. Dogen's writing is based on the Buddhist philosophy and experience of 'no-self' and the unconditioned reality of existence-being, also called the 'dharmakaya', the mystical and transcendent body of light. Topic headings and contemporary verses give insight into spiritual awakening. This clear presentation of the complexities of 'Bendowa' eliminates the redundancies, dogmatism, circularities, anachronisms, Buddhist terms, and dialectical arguments of the original. Dogen's difficult and non-dual philosophical essay has been recast into contemporary verse and subdivided into topics.

The true story, Defining Moments: A Father’s Journey Into His Son’s Addiction, drives readers into an Oxy deal intended to save a young man’s life, walks them through the history of the father who would perpetrate it, climaxes with the disastrous immediate consequences, and ultimately, reveals the healing of an entire family. This story has drama and action, but it also has some real education: The drugs our kids do are different than the drugs we did. Even drug-savvy parents are unprepared for what’s tempting today’s teens. In 2008, half a million people used Oxycodone for non-medical purposes for the first time. In 2009, one in ten high school seniors abused narcotic painkillers. Today, the numbers are even higher, as Oxy remains one of the only illicit drugs experiencing an increase in popularity and use, and death from drugs has surpassed even auto accidents as a cause of death in the US.
