A few years ago the world was suddenly astounded by hearing of an experiment of a most novel and daring nature, altogether unprecedented in the annals of science. In accordance with the Cambridge men's note, the cannon intended to discharge the projectile was to be planted in some country not further than 28° north or south from the equator, so that it might be aimed vertically at the Moon in the zenith. The bullet was to be animated with an initial velocity of 12,000 yards to the second. It was to be fired off on the night of December 1st, at thirteen minutes and twenty seconds before eleven o'clock, precisely. Four days afterwards it was to hit the Moon, at the very moment that she reached her perigee, that is to say, her nearest point to the Earth, about 228,000 miles distant. The leading members of the Club, namely President Barbican, Secretary Marston, Major Elphinstone and General Morgan, forming the executive committee, held several meetings to discuss the shape and material of the bullet, the nature and position of the cannon, and the quantity and quality of the powder. These questions settled, Barbican, aided by Murphy, the Chief Engineer of the Cold Spring Iron Works, selected a spot in Florida, near the 27th degree north latitude, called Stony Hill, where after the performance of many wonderful feats in mining engineering, the Columbiad was successfully cast. Things had reached this state when an incident occurred which excited the general interest a hundred fold.

During the Federal war in the United States a new and very influential club was established in the city of Baltimore, Maryland. It is well known with what energy the military instinct was developed amongst that nation of shipowners, shopkeepers, and mechanics. Mere tradesmen jumped their counters to become extempore captains, colonels, and generals without having passed the Military School at West Point; they soon rivalled their colleagues of the old continent, and, like them, gained victories by dint of lavishing bullets, millions, and men. But where Americans singularly surpassed Europeans was in the science of ballistics, or of throwing massive weapons by the use of an engine; not that their arms attained a higher degree of perfection, but they were of unusual dimensions, and consequently of hitherto unknown ranges. The English, French, and Prussians have nothing to learn about flank, running, enfilading, or point blank firing; but their cannon, howitzers, and mortars are mere pocket pistols compared with the formidable engines of American artillery. This fact ought to astonish no one. The Yankees, the first mechanicians in the world, are born engineers, just as Italians are musicians and Germans meta-physicians.

Discover the fundamental nature of matter; everything is made of atoms. The atomic theory is brought to life in "Atoms in Motion" -- this book is a guide to fully interactive atomistic simulation that uses sophisticated Molecular Dynamics (MD) algorithms to perform computational chemistry calculations right on your iPad. Such computations reveal the motions of atoms as they attract, repel, and collide with one another. Fun for all ages -- in this simulation you control the atoms! With the tap of the finger you can add, delete, or highlight atoms within the simulation. With a gentle touch you can move, place, or throw atoms. With the swipe of a finger you can control the temperature and explore the states-of-matter (solids, liquids, and gases). Discover the physics behind the ideal gas laws, and perform your own experiments by changing the volume, the number of atoms in the simulation, or the temperature. This Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation includes realistic interatomic potentials of four noble gas elements: Helium, Neon, Argon, and Krypton (the van der Waals forces are computed using a Lennard-Jones 6-12 potential). The MD simulation continuously computes the pressure, and dynamically plots the pressure versus temperature, volume, or the number of atoms. Users can vary the temperature from near absolute zero to over 500K, and add up to 1,000 atoms to the simulation. Enjoy the Atoms!

Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (Italian pronunciation: [leoˈnardo da vˈvintʃi] About this sound pronunciation (help·info); April 15, 1452 – May 2, 1519, Old Style) was an Italian Renaissance polymath: painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer. His genius, perhaps more than that of any other figure, epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal. Leonardo has often been described as the archetype of the Renaissance Man, a man of "unquenchable curiosity" and "feverishly inventive imagination". He is widely considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and perhaps the most diversely talented person ever to have lived. According to art historian Helen Gardner, the scope and depth of his interests were without precedent and "his mind and personality seem to us superhuman, the man himself mysterious and remote". Marco Rosci states that while there is much speculation about Leonardo, his vision of the world is essentially logical rather than mysterious, and that the empirical methods he employed were unusual for his time.

Stephen Webb - The Truth About Our Universe artwork The Truth About Our Universe
Stephen Webb
Genre: Physics
Publish Date: 01 July 2014
Publisher: Stephen Webb
Seller: Smashwords, Inc.

You don’t need to know anything about maths or astronomy to read this book The title of this book is to inspire you into asking the question “is what we think we already know about our universe correct". It covers what we believe science has told us so far, what we think we know today and also looks at some of the alternatives that may hold the way forward for new theories. I think that science sometimes gets itself stuck in a rut, mainly because of our love of math’s which we use to back it up what we think is happening, but that does not mean that its correct. Astronomy is mostly based on results from observations taken time and time again. It’s how we interrupt what we think is going on. Everybody in the scientific community seems to agree about the Standard Model for the very small stuff which they say makes up our universe, that is what we teach it in all our universities. But there is so much about the Standard Model which does not add up and science can't explain why, we have to use maths to try and find the answers. So we end up with a Model which can be backed up by math’s which uses made up forces and mathematical units which no one truly understands in order to make it work. To date there are a number of theories but none of them join everything together, some theories deal with areas like quantum physicists, the very small particles we believe exist but these don’t work on the really large objects like galaxies. Now we have string theory, again made up from dimensions that we can’t prove exist. But if they did then we could make the math’s work. That’s a really big IF! In this book I try to simply cover what we think we know about our universe and how we came to the idea of the standard model for the small stuff. I then put forward my own ideas and explain how I came to these conclusions. I am not a trained scientist or a mathematician nor am I saying that what I think is true; I am simply putting forward my own ideas in the hope that others will put forward theirs.

There is no human work in existence that contains statements as far beyond the level of knowledge of its time as the Qur’an. Scientific opinions comparable to those in the Qur’an are the result of modern knowledge. In the commentaries to translations of the Qur’an that have appeared in European languages, I have only been able to find scattered and vague references to them. Nor do commentators writing in Arabic provide a complete study of the aspects of the Qur’an that deal with scientific matters. This is why the idea of a comprehensive study of the problem appealed to me. In addition to this, a comparative study of similar data contained in the Bible (Old Testament and Gospels) seemed desirable. Thus, a research project was developed from the comparison of certain passages in the Holy Scriptures of each monotheistic religion with modern scientific knowledge. The project resulted in the publication of a book entitled, The Bible, the Qur'an and Science. The first French edition appeared in May 1976.

Electromagnetism is all around us and is essential to the world in which we live.  We rely on electromagnetic waves to heat our food, carry cell phone calls, and even bring music to the radios in our cars. But how does NASA sense this energy to study vegetation on Earth, monitor solar eruptions on the Sun, or detect elements on another planet?  This iBook provides animation and interactive graphics to illustrate electromagnetism and its associated wave properties. NASA imagery and spectral signatures demonstrate how NASA instruments harness the unique qualities of each wavelength to help study the dynamic properties of our Sun, the complexities of our Earth System, and the origins of the universe.

David Christopher Lane - Is Consciousness Physical? artwork Is Consciousness Physical?
The Material Basis of Awareness
David Christopher Lane
Genre: Science & Nature
Publish Date: 25 March 2011
Publisher: MSAC Philosophy Group
Seller: David Lane

The feeling that consciousness is not physical or that consciousness is distinct from our body is a very common one. Indeed, the very sensation of awareness almost prima facie convinces us that our "I" is not merely an "it." John Archibald Wheeler, the renowned physicist who once mentored Richard Feynman, famously quipped: "The universe and all that it contains ('it') may arise from the myriad yes-no choices of measurement ('bits')." For some who extended Wheeler's line of thinking even further, basing everything upon an informational notion of matter (versus one where matter "forms" data), the ultimate idea was that the universe wasn't at all physical, but rather the condensation of a mathematical reality which in itself was formless, akin in some ways to Plato's notion of universal ideals or archetypes.

Can we doubt that individuals having any advantage, however slight, over others, would have the best chance of surviving and of procreating their kind?' In the Origin of Species (1859) Darwin challenged many of the most deeply held beliefs of the Western world. His insistence on the immense length of the past and on the abundance of life-forms, present and extinct, dislodged man from his central position in creation and called into question the role of the Creator. He showed that new species are achieved by natural selection, and that absence of plan is an inherent part of the evolutionary process. Darwin's prodigious reading, experimentation, and observations on his travels fed into his great work, which draws on material from the Galapagos Islands to rural Staffordshire, from English back gardens to colonial encounters.

Biology is the fastest growing science, and life sciences are being funded and researched more and more. As a result, genetic testing and analysis has emerged in today’s society as a new way to predict one’s health. Scientists use genetic testing and analysis to map individuals’ genes to determine health risks for diseases and conditions or to determine ancestry. Although genetic testing is controversial to some, the benefits of genetic testing, such as early identification of possible diseases and proper dosages of medications, greatly outweigh the possible concerns.

Genre: Nature

Should we go vegan? The unambiguous conclusion of this short book is "yes". This conclusion is reached through a broad examination of the consequences of our not being vegan – both in relation to human health, environmental pollution, the risk of the spread of diseases, and in relation to the beings we exploit and kill. On all these levels the conclusion is clear: We have no good reason to not go vegan, while we have many good reasons to stop our practice of raising, killing and eating non-human animals and things from them. The bottom line: We have a strong ethical obligation to go vegan. "Magnus Vinding makes a compelling case for ending the abuse of other sentient beings. What will we tell our grandchildren? ("But I liked the taste?")" — David Pearce, founder of BLTC Research and co-founder of Humanity+, author of The Hedonistic Imperative .  "An excellent concise statement of the arguments for going vegan." — Peter Singer, Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University, author of The Life You Can Save: Acting Now to End World Poverty  and Animal Liberation .

While most people are aware that mosquitoes are involved in the transmission of diseases among people or animals, very few have an appreciation for the relevant aspects of the mosquito’s life cycle, how they obtain the blood meals they need to survive, and how these processes are involved in the transmission of disease-causing microorganisms. This book addresses those points via engaging, interactive activities that inform people about two very relevant diseases, namely Zika infection in people and heartworm disease in companion animals.

Namibia, Photographs from an Ancient Land showcases landscape, portraiture and wildlife images from Pam & Wayne Osborn’s travels through the Namibian wilderness. Namibia is a young country in an ancient land. It is sparsely populated with immense tracts of wilderness. Formerly known as South West Africa, it was colonised firstly by Germany and then South Africa. A bloody war of independence culminated in Namibia raising its own flag in the capital Windhoek in 1990. It’s a land rich in photographic opportunities. From quiver trees and the rugged chasm of the Fish River Canyon, the classic towering sand dunes of Sossusvlei and the wildlife of the Etosha Pan.  The ghost diamond-mining town of Kolmanskop reveals nature’s reclaim of a decaying settlement. Semi nomadic Himba tribes eking a subsistence existence provide a sobering contrast to our modern lifestyles.

Neem is the toothbrush tree. Cloves have eugenol, Eugenol is/was used externally by dentists for its antiseptic and pain relieving ability. Take one whole Clove between cheek and gum, after about an hour it will soften up a little. Bite it occasionally for fresh breath or dental pain. Drip a little fresh Noni/Kura juice on a toothache. Myrrh is used for gingivitis. Find some chewing gum with Mastic Tree resin, it is supposed to freshen the breath and tighten the gums. I could not found a plant for "OW!! My Tooth Is Killing Me" ...nothing like a good dentist.

UNDERSTANDING EXISTENCE explores the fundamental question: How is it possible that we exist? But also other intriguing questions such as: Were the disappearing / downing / crashing of three Malaysian based airplanes in a single year, a mere coincidence? Or are there other as yet inexplicable dynamics at play? Although a bold call it attempts to interpret such an understanding by investigating cutting edge science. To this end it literally attempts to provide the ABC's of why we are here and I have to warn that in doing so I'm admittedly not attempting to be absolutely scientifically correct. This is because my aim from the onset was to draft a readable and interesting book rather than a scientific dissertation. I have attempted to frame this understanding on the Theory of Relativity as well as other findings, so to perhaps come to a reasonable constructive understanding of what God may actually be (that is in as far as an agnostic can indeed do so). My approach has been to assert the existence of some mysterious realm based on a simple mathematical equation that goes awry the moment it reaches what we currently understand quantum reality to be. My interpretation is that, by its very nature, reality is a paradox. And as a consequence one should also strive to approach one's life philosophy by integrating often seemingly diametrically opposing views on reality, and that developing this paradoxic mindset, is the true key to understanding what is behind it all.

This book introduces the explanation of the fundamental issues, which underlie the Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation and Antigravity, providing you with some details associated with the gravitational and anti-gravitational processes in micro- and macro-world.  Is the Universe created from nothing? Is it infinite? Is it empty? How was the Universe formed? Where did the matter come from to become the uniform mass or any other dense medium? Where did the initial density perturbations come from to grow under their own Gravity? Do we live in a Black Hole?  We discuss the questions mentioned above hence describe the Universe.

Richard Lighthouse - Mathematical Solution Unifying the Four Fundamental Forces in Nature artwork Mathematical Solution Unifying the Four Fundamental Forces in Nature
Richard Lighthouse
Genre: Physics
Publish Date: 04 November 2013
Publisher: Richard Lighthouse
Seller: Smashwords, Inc.

This technical note describes a simple mathematical-geometrical solution for unifying the four fundamental forces in nature. The fundamental forces of gravitation, electromagnetism, strong force, and the weak force are actually different aspects of the same force. In general, the relationship between the four forces can be described using a form of the equation for Analog Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (Analog-QAM). This equation form is developed utilizing the concept of a “blinking” or discrete physical universe. The approach to develop the solution is described by minimizing the number of available dimensions (zero), which is in contrast to numerous efforts (String theory, M-theory, Quantum gravity) that attempt to maximize the number of dimensions under consideration. An Electrical Universe (EU) model is presented that provides sufficient conditions for a solution. Confirmation of the theory is suggested through small, discrete-time interval measurements of the gravitational acceleration force and the Electromagnetic Force, where they will be seen to vary continuously, and yet also retain a “time-averaged” value. Each reader must comprehend that our universe literally blinks off and on, approximately 1 trillion times every second (1.1 THz). For those unconvinced that our universe is blinking - please see the related ebook, "The First Periodic Table for Elementary Particles," which provides compelling mathematical evidence. For more than 2 years, this author has been stalked, harassed, and threatened by US Government agents from the CIA, FBI, and NSA - because of the content of these ebooks. My home has been broken into, repeatedly. My computer, phone, and alarm system have been hacked - including those of my friends and family. It is truly sad and pathetic, these agencies have become criminal organizations.

Toby Clark
Genre: Physics
Publish Date: 28 January 2013
Publisher: Toby Clark
Seller: Smashwords, Inc.

This treatise offers an alternative paradigm to the 'Big Bang' theory of the origin of the universe. It takes a fresh look at current cosmological knowledge, suggests the existence of and defines a Megamassive Black Hole. The existence of such bodies allows a rational argument for a steady state universe. This paradigm does not require a singularity at a particular moment, arguably the beginning of time, nor expansion at many times the speed of light, or the existence of the Higgs Boson. It comfortably encompasses dark energy and dark matter, neutron stars and the anisotropic nature of the universe

Genre: Astronomy
Publish Date: 03 February 1919

It is claimed by astronomers that their science is not only the oldest, but that it is the most highly developed of the sciences. Indeed it should be so, since no other science has ever received such support from royalty, from the state and from the private individual. However this may be, there is no doubt that in recent years astronomers have had granted to them greater opportunities for carrying on large pieces of work than have been entrusted to men in any other department of pure science. One might expect that the practical results of a science like physics would appeal to the man who has made a vast fortune through some of its applications. The telephone, the electric transmission of power, wireless telegraphy and the submarine cable are instances of immense financial returns derived from the most abstruse principles of physics. Yet there are scarcely any physical laboratories devoted to research, or endowed with independent funds for this object, except those supported by the government. The endowment of astronomical observatories devoted to research, and not including that given for teaching, is estimated to amount to half a million dollars annually. Several of the larger observatories have an annual income of fifty thousand dollars.

Determinism, Randomness and Uncaused Events
Karl Svozil
Genre: Physics
Publish Date: 13 February 2018
Publisher: Springer International Publishing
Seller: Springer Nature B.V.

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book addresses the physical phenomenon of events that seem to occur spontaneously and without any known cause. These are to be contrasted with events that happen in a (pre-)determined, predictable, lawful, and causal way. All our knowledge is based on self-reflexive theorizing, as well as on operational means of empirical perception. Some of the questions that arise are the following: are these limitations reflected by our models? Under what circumstances does chance kick in? Is chance in physics merely epistemic? In other words, do we simply not know enough, or use too crude levels of description for our predictions? Or are certain events "truly", that is, irreducibly, random? The book tries to answer some of these questions by introducing intrinsic, embedded observers and provable unknowns; that is, observables and procedures which are certified (relative to the assumptions) to be unknowable or undoable. A (somewhat iconoclastic) review of quantum mechanics is presented which is inspired by quantum logic. Postulated quantum (un-)knowables are reviewed. More exotic unknowns originate in the assumption of classical continua, and in finite automata and generalized urn models, which mimic complementarity and yet maintain value definiteness. Traditional conceptions of free will, miracles and dualistic interfaces are based on gaps in an otherwise deterministic universe.

Seller: PublishMyBook.Online

‘Mathematics the Truth: Moving mathematics teaching into the age of quantum mechanics and relativity’ by Malcolm Cameron “Serious, light-hearted, insight.” “Shakes mathematics teaching icons …” “Rescues mathematics from a black hole.” Currently mathematics is taught like a Latin, without motivation, restricted to the period from Euclid in the BC to the Renaissance.  This thinking degrades mathematics which is fundamental. Without mathematics sciences are merely observational nature study, engineering is trial and error, while technology is only training in use of imported stuff anyway.  Mathematics is the great philosophical basis for understanding the universe from the Quantum to Cosmology and Relativity, its history and future. Citizens ought to know what is happening in these subjects, and in experiments probing the structure of the universe, at least in concept. We must at least note where classical mathematics and physics are in error giving a lead for future understanding of quantum computing, for example, and for many biological and physical phenomena. Reference to the unknown, the un-understood, and the unexpected are the major motivation to understand any subject.   ‘Mathematics the Truth’ is popular, real, modern mathematics but not a popularization. It is a book for anyone who wants to put the motivation back into mathematics. Anyone who wants to know the unknown, the un-understood, and the unexpected in mathematics.  ‘Mathematics the Truth’ is suitable for use in upper secondary schools, but will be golden to anyone interested in mathematics from the true angle. You will never look at mathematics in the same way again You are a brainy bastard. Malcolm McDonald, FEDFA Union, State President, 1992-96
