Whether or not you see the Northern Lights in Iceland it's still an incredible escape, and some things you can do in Iceland whatever the weather. (According to the Icelandic there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes.) This guide will take you to some incredible hotels in Reykjavik and Grindavik, to The Blue Lagoon and another, only in Iceland experience, riding Icelandic horses through lava fields. I used to get extremely burned out in my old job and couldn't even handle finding and booking a hotel and flight or finding what to do when I did take time off. So, I thought "wouldn't it be awesome if someone would write a guide that just gave you one perfect escape; the perfect hotel, spa, flight and restaurant." So that's what I did. (Only in this guide you get at least two hotels. This is Iceland, it likes to break the rules.)

Moscow’s skyline is largely defined by the seven towering skyscrapers nicknamed “The Seven Sisters.” Also known locally as “Stalinskie Vysotki” (Сталиские высотки – Stalin’s High-rises), they are one of the leading architectural legacies of the Stalinist period. The Soviet Baroque architecture that The Sisters embody is seen by some as unattractive; the buildings themselves are somewhat controversial due to the fact that some see them, with their looming size and sinister-looking spires, as grim reminders of the Stalinist repression. However, while debate still continues on whether these buildings are beauties or beasts, there is no doubt that they have become a major representation of the Soviet era and modern-day Moscow

Rome matters. If there’s one thread that unites the essays in this booklet and the docents who wrote them it’s this simple revelation. Whether we’re talking about Tom Rankin in his work as director of the American Institute for Roman Culture, Lindsey Schneider finishing up her dissertation on Baroque art, or Frank Dabell as he lectures on-site to his students—to a person, these scholars and professionals are in love with Rome and understand that perhaps no other city is as central to western history as this one.

This is travel book. We anchored in Batavia Road, and I went ashore, visited the Dutch General, and desired the privilege of buying provisions that I wanted, which was granted me. In this road we lay till the 17th of October following, when, having fitted the ship, recruited myself with provisions, filled all my water, and the season of the year for returning towards Europe being come, I set sail from Batavia, and on the 19th of December made the Cape of Good Hope, whence departing January 11 we made the island of St. Helena on the 31st; and February the 21st the island of Ascension; near to which my ship, having sprung a leak which could not be stopped, foundered at sea; with much difficulty we got ashore where we lived on goats and turtle; and on the 26th of February found, to our great comfort, on the south-east side of a high mountain, about half a mile from its top, a spring of fresh water. I returned to England in the Canterbury East India ship.

Genre: Europe

The Danube may justifiably lay claim to the title of Europe’s most majestic river. It flows through ten countries on its long journey from Schwarzwald (the Black Forest) down to the Black Sea. Slovaks, too, regard this river as their own although it only, as it were, brushes up against Slovakia. However, the river is of major importance to this small country at the heart of Europe, as it collects water from almost the whole of its territory. The Váh, the longest river in Slovakia, the Morava, Nitra, Hron and Ipeľ feed the waters of the Danube on its long journey. The Slovak capital Bratislava is situated on the banks of the river and the great river is one of the important means of communication with both Western and Eastern Europe. Settle down for a spectacular virtual cruise downstream along the Slovak stretch of this European river in the pages of this book.

India is big cat country. Tigers, Lions and Leopards prowl the many forests spread across the country. They may have numbered in the tens of thousands at one time, but their population has fallen sharply in the last century. Estimates number Tigers at 1411 and Asiatic Lions at 411 while those for the Leopard are only guesses at a few thousand.  You have to meet these cats in their natural environment to really appreciate what majestic creatures they all are. And you can never have enough of them - reason enough for going back again and again for safaris at India’s many reserves. Spotting is not always easy though - luck, time of the year and your guide play a big role. But no expert guarantees a sighting. While you may have frustrating days, you will feel like a successful treasure hunter when you do see any of the species.  Flip through the pages to re-live some of my experiences  - and hope you have even better ones to share with me.

This book is an account of the Establishment of the Colonies of Port Jackson and Norfolk Island Those occupations, which pleased Phillip while they were new, no longer pleased him when they became familiar. And he hastened to offer his skill and his services to Portugal when it engaged in warfare with Spain. His offer was readily accepted, because such skill and services were necessary amidst an arduous struggle with a too powerful opponent. And, such was his conduct and such his success, that when the recent interference of France, in 1778, made it his duty to fight for his king, and to defend his country, the Portugueze court regretted his departure, but applauded his motive.

If you were to ask people for one city that truly represented the modern world, New York would be many people’s first choice.  It has been at the centre of world industry, commerce and culture for almost 200 years.  New York has so many great buildings and famous places, but what are its seven wonders?  Like the Ancient Greeks, who came up with the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, I endeavoured to list New York’s most brilliant places. The Seven Wonders of New York is a photo-essay which describes the seven most wondrous landmarks of New York. It combines breathtaking photography with insightful essays.

Personally, elephants are one of my favourite animals.  They always have been, but they truly won my heart when they put on an unbelievable show in the Manas National Park in the north-eastern state of Assam of India.  Elephants have always been a part of the lives of Indians going back to the time of mythologies. They have been domesticated, and deployed in battlefields. They have entertained in circuses and fairs, used for joy rides, and served as vehicles for transporting people and goods alike. They roam in the wild, and are employed by temples for ceremonies. They are shot for their ivory tusks, and revered as manifestations of Elephant God Ganesha. Elephants make for great friends but you need to be wary of their anger and mood swings; but it sure takes a lot to provoke an elephant. They may be big, but are vegetarians and mostly gentle. Except the male tuskers - especially when they are on heat! Join me on this elephant ride.

This book describes a visit to Vietnam that my husband, Jim and I took with friends  in February 2012.  Our trip began in the North, in Hanoi and Halong Bay and proceeded south through Hue and Hoi An, ending in the South in Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. We had bilingual guides at each location we visited which added immensely to our enjoyment and understanding. Upon returning from the trip, I researched much of what we learned in country and this knowledge has been added to the text. I believe this book will be of interest to those who have been to Vietnam or to those planning to visit in the future.

My trip to Iceland in the Fall of 2009 left a great impression on me. The beauty of the land, people and culture, captivated my attention during and after the trip. This ebook is an effort to convey this experience through beautiful photography, interactive maps and high definition videos from a group of talented cinematographers. Most of us who come from a mild countryside cannot comprehend a place like Iceland. More like a place of mythology, Iceland is geologically young and vibrant, and with diverse landscapes. With its active volcanoes, geysers, and glaciers, you begin to realize this place did not just happen millions of years ago - it is happening now. I hope this book brings you closer to the visual splendor this country has to offer.

This book is a photo essay on the Sights and Sites of Paris as seen through my camera lens as I walked the streets of this most photogenic of cities. My Parisian friend Jean-François (Jeff) Labrouche, who is a world class photographer, said, “So many people smile for you. This is unusual. I wish I could get such a response”. Jeff suggested I should publish some of my photos under the title of “Faces and Places, Paris” and this is the result.  The photo of the naked woman posed in front to the Manet painting in the Musée d’Orsay is atypical of my experiences. She passed through the staff door like it was a curtain, walking confidently through the visitors showing no embarrassment or timidity. When she posed, the similarities of her figure and hairdo to the woman in the painting were striking. Suddenly, she turned to leave just as she had come.  In Jardin des Tuileries, a young woman was photographing her boyfriend as he fondled the breast of a Maillot sculpture. Asking permission to take photos as well, she replied, “Mais oui!”. It is my hope that these photos will remind visitors of their special times in Paris and encourage others to make a visit.

A classic of travel writing, this book recounts Stevenson's adventures on an extended walk through uplands and mountains in south-western France. Humorous on his own failings as a traveller, and on his travails with Modestine the self-willed donkey, it is also an exploration of peasant life in an area marked by the violence of the wars of religion. This version includes the fragment "A mountain town in France", originally intended as the opening chapter, but often omitted and published as a separate essay.

Books of the Marvels of the World" or "Description of the World" (Divisament dou monde), also nicknamed "Il Milione" ("The Million") or "Oriente Poliano", but commonly called "The Travels of Marco Polo", is a 13th-century travelogue written down by Rustichello da Pisa from stories told by Marco Polo, describing the travels of the latter through Asia, Persia, China, and Indonesia between 1271 and 1291. It's been a very famous and popular book since the 14th century, creating the image of Marco Polo as the icon of the bold traveller. Presenting Marco Polo as an important figure at the court of the Mongol leader Kublai Khan, the book was written in Old French by Rustichello da Pisa, a romance author of the time, who was reportedly working from accounts which he had heard from Marco Polo when they were imprisoned in Genoa, having been captured while on a ship.

Though the good city of Paris appears to be less in fashion than in other days with those representatives of our race-not always, perhaps, acknowledged as the soundest and stiffest-curious of foreign opportunity and addicted to foreign sojourns, it probably none the less remains true that such frequentations of France as may be said still to flourish among us have as much as ever the wondrous capital, and the wondrous capital alone, for their object.

All countries, even many regions, have their own colors. Winter and summer, spring and fall paint their own ones. But each country has its characteristic color signature. The stereotype of Italy is that of the summer, the celebrated blue of the Adriatic, the dark green of the pines, and the ocher of the old villas. But there is also the Italy of the mountains and cool days. Culture and taste influence clothing, billboards and house paint. Humans add their colors to the colors of nature...

Our tour begins at Beveridge, north of Melbourne, and weaves its way along good country roads to visit the towns of Mansfield, Beechworth, Glenrowan and a number of other fascinating locations. And there are plenty of places along the way to learn about Australia’s most famous bushranger, Ned Kelly. Highlights include the granite landscapes of Seven Creeks Country in the Strathbogie Ranges, the tall nature-filled forests that surround Stringybark Creek and the little-known Woolshed Valley in the heart of gold country. The tour also visits Milawa, noted as Victoria’s first gourmet region, the King Valley where locally grown produce is in abundance, and Beechworth where history really comes to life. The journey ends at Glenrowan where Ned Kelly’s Last Stand was played out. Through the pages of this book, self-drive travellers will discover attractive country towns and magnificent countryside. No special vehicle is required and there’s plenty of accommodation along the way from motels to bush camps.
