In our January 26 LEGEND update, we listed a projected ship date of April 6 for the 301 devices purchased by our 280 Kickstarter Backers. We are informing you today that we have made a necessary change to the device battery so that it will perform up to all our standards. Our supplier has confirmed it will be delivering those devices to our production facility in Shenzhen, China this week.Â
Upon receiving the new batteries, we will conduct 3-4 days of quality control checks with the new battery seated inside the LEGEND device. The battery has already been benchmarked and we believe it will perform as expected with LEGEND, but we need to run it through this one final review to make sure your LEGEND performs flawlessly. Those of you who follow tech trends are aware Android device giant Samsung recently concluded significant testing to identify battery flaws that impacted two different mobile devices. It happens to the biggest of us.Â
So let’s jump into our new expected delivery timeline, as it’s obvious by today’s date the projected shipping on April 6 was not met:
And we’ve heard some of you loud and clear, and we can commit to doing better on our updates during the remainder of the process. And here’s what we’re going to do – we’re going to post a graphic to this very section that provides an easy visual to show where we are as each step is completed. Every time we complete a phase of what we just outlined, we will update the tracker.Â
And as we have stated previously, we will be keeping a close eye on shipping dates from Concord and the upcoming race weekend(s). If you prefer to pick up your LEGEND in-person at the RE Flagship Store at one of the first two races after we begin shipping to Backers, we will work with you to determine your best option.Â
We have a total of 368 LEGEND devices that have come off the production line in Shenzhen and are awaiting the new battery. We’re sure these photos and video are welcome visuals to our Backers, who have waited with great anticipation for their devices.Â
For some of you, this may be the first time you’ve seen the inner workings of a Shenzhen production facility. For others who have seen coverage of the Apple or Samsung facilities in the city, these visuals should be familiar, given the assembly process – a mix of by-hand and machine – is identical.
During the development process, our design team produced a prototype of LEGEND with a dark gray housing. At that point, we decided to produce LEGEND in both the original “RE Red” and the dark gray. At this stage of our production, we have approximately two-thirds of our inventory in dark gray.
We will be reaching out to you via email this week to secure your preferred LEGEND color. We will be taking the requests on a first-come, first-served basis. However, if you receive the color you don’t prefer, you’ll be able to exchange your device with us for the other color, free of charge. We’ll also honor that exchange even if you’ve used your LEGEND because we want you to begin enjoying the device features at your earliest convenience. We expect to have thousands of devices off the assembly line in May.Â
This is a reminder that our free FanVision vouchers are still available to Kickstarter backers who are attending races prior to receiving your LEGEND device. Please email us at email@example.com to claim your voucher(s).Â
We want to close by thanking you for being a LEGEND Backer. You’ve been both our biggest supporters and toughest critics, and each makes us a better company. Kickstarter is a great home for innovation, and it also allows consumers the opportunity a behind-the-scenes look at the thrill, and challenges, or bringing a product to life. The technology sector is an especially challenging one, as the smallest calculation or alteration can have massive downstream impacts. Every step of the way, each timeline adjustment has been made to deliver a better product to our Backers. In the end, we know it will be worth it, and we thank you for hanging in there.          Â
To all Backers,
An email was sent to each of you this afternoon from the Racing Electronics Customer Service team (email address is firstname.lastname@example.org) regarding free FanVision rental vouchers for races between the Daytona 500 and the April race at Texas Motor Speedway.
Please check the inbox of the email associated with your Kickstarter account for the details. If you did not receive the email, please contact us at email@example.com and place the words "LEGEND Backer - FanVision Vouchers" in the email subject line and we will send you the details. Please do not respond to this update, as your questions need to be addressed by Customer Service, not the LEGEND team.
Thank you for your support!
This week's update is another positive one, as the factory in China responsible for producing your LEGEND device has confirmed in writing to Racing Electronics they are operating slightly ahead of schedule with the timeline to package and deliver the devices to our Concord, N.C. headquarters. We expect those devices to leave China on March 21.
As we stated in the last update, the factory began its Chinese New Year shutdown today, and they will resume production on the lines on February 26.
You can look for the next production update in three weeks, on Friday, March 2.
This is the most significant update we’ve posted because, for the first time, we’re able to give you the expected shipping date for your LEGEND device(s) from the Racing Electronics headquarters in Concord, N.C. Â
Kickstarter Backer LEGEND devices are projected to ship on Friday, April 6.
We say that with equal parts excitement you will all begin enjoying LEGEND in the near future, and sincere appreciation for the disappointment some of you will feel that the device was not in your hands to open the 2018 motorsports seasons. Â
We previously discussed our focus on trying to hit the deadline presented by the Daytona 500, but ultimately, we could not get the devices far enough into the production process to beat the looming Chinese New Year holiday, which will shut down production for 16 days. For those not familiar with the holiday’s impact on work done in China, all our production will be halted from February 9-25. Â
Full production capabilities will resume on February 26 and should wrap up by March 23. The devices will be packaged and shipped to the United States, with a targeted arrival of April 1. It will take us approximately four days to prepare all the individual Backer shipments, which will include the hard case(s) and engraved plate(s) for those in the $399+ pledge tiers. Â
FanVision CTO Jean Arseneau will be in China January 29-31 providing final direction on packaging and shipping to the US. As a reminder, LEGEND packaging includes the LEGEND device, lanyard, battery, soft case, and earbuds. Â
Your free year of activations can be used at any series event where we offer FanVision video services, and that calendar year will not begin until after you receive your LEGEND device shipment.Â
For the Backers in the $55 and $129 pledge tiers, you will have the opportunity to utilize your “LEGEND For The Weekend” benefit as early in mid-April. We are targeting the launch of our at-track rental program for LEGEND at Richmond Raceway on April 20-21. You will receive details directly from our customer service team in early April on how to reserve your devices. Â
Backers who purchased one or more LEGEND devices will receive a free FanVision event weekend rental voucher for each device you bought through Kickstarter. We understand some of you will be attending events prior to April 6 and we would like to ensure you have a device and headphones to add to your enjoyment of that race weekend. Those vouchers will be mailed from Racing Electronics within the week. Â
After receiving LEGEND, all owners will need to create a customer account and register their device(s) at racingelectronics.com. Those of you who already own a FanVision unit will be familiar with this process. This will allow you to begin receiving your free year of FanVision activations, as well as secure your free OTA Scanner for the life of the product. Â
Following your free year of activation, Backers will receive a 10% discount off the online price for single-event activations (which is already discounted down from trackside pricing for the same activation). That discount will be tied to your account’s registered LEGEND devices. Activations must be made online at racingelectronics.com to qualify (trackside activations will be subject to advertised trackside pricing) and you will receive more information on this when you receive your device. Â
We will be offering multi-race device activation packages for LEGEND. As you know, Backer-owned devices receive a free year of activation, so this is provided solely as information. Those packages are as follows: 3 Races - $49.95, 5 Races - $74.95, 10 Races - $99.95, Unlimited Season Pass - $299.95 . Â
Our Kickstarter Backers will receive free Over-The-Air (OTA) scanner programming, for the life of the LEGEND device. For all other LEGEND owners, the pricing for 2018 will be $15 for single-event OTA and $45 for an annual pass. This pricing mirrors scanner frequency programming. Â
Our product development team has been developing a scope for the new Racing Electronics headphones we promised in our Kickstarter stretch goal. The current plan is for the development of a great looking and sounding Bluetooth-enabled headphones that also provide significant noise reduction for the motorsports environment. We will continue to provide updates on the Kickstarter page as we move down the road with the development of that equipment. Â
We sincerely hope this is an exciting time for you all. LEGEND is nearly here, and we know you’re going to enjoy it. Thank you for your support and belief in this great product.
This is the two-week mark since the last update to our Backer community, and it will be a brief one tonight, but for good reasons.
Our technical team has been working with the overseas factory group to shore up the latest information to share with you. The factory team will have a shipping date for us in the coming days, so we're going to push this update to next Friday so we can share with you the best information that's available to us.
At that time, we should have a great deal of information to share with you, including ship date, fee structures (for after your free year of activations expire), and exclusive benefits and discounts for LEGEND Backers.
As we frequently say here, thank you very much for your support and continued enthusiasm for this product. We'll talk to you next week!
January 5, 2018Â
The extended-use testing we outlined in the December 19 update was completed over the last two weeks in our Montreal offices. As a reminder, this testing was designed to put LEGEND through its paces over a period of time much greater than any major series race event on the calendar. We’re happy to report that testing – which featured dozens of LEGEND devices off the assembly line – was completed with no technical issues surfacing.Â
We have a photo to share of the first batch of LEGENDs off the assembly line. This is an exciting “family photo” of sorts, and as you can see, the units are powered up.
The next thing we’d like to share is a video showing a portion of the hand-assembled components in the factory. The hand-assembled portion of LEGEND involves the housing and the installation of the screen, cameras, microphone, and speaker.Â
Note: The printed circuit board assembly, or PCBA, is assembled by machines and tested by machines during the assembly process. Due to some of the proprietary nature of the device, we’re not showing that part of the assembly.
You could call this “burying the lede,” but we like to think of it as a reward for reading the entire update:
The testing is complete.
The assembly line performs as expected and without issue.
All components have been purchased and are in the process of being delivered.
Let’s make some LEGENDs!
Every effort of this program is now targeted squarely on delivering your LEGEND in February. Like everyone in the motorsports industry, we are keenly aware of the DAYTONA 500 weekend on February 16-18 (six weeks from today), and our focus is on that deadline.
It’s been a long journey to get to this point. We sincerely thank each and every one of you for believing in this project and backing the effort, and we look forward to improving your fan experience with LEGEND!
Happy New Year to all our LEGEND backers. We hope you had an enjoyable holiday season and are looking forward to an incredible 2018. Given the holiday, our two week update will be delayed by three days, but we will have that posted by end of day Friday.
We will talk to you soon.
