LEGEND Update: January 19, 2018

January 5, 2018

The extended-use testing we outlined in the December 19 update was completed over the last two weeks in our Montreal offices. As a reminder, this testing was designed to put LEGEND through its paces over a period of time much greater than any major series race event on the calendar. We’re happy to report that testing – which featured dozens of LEGEND devices off the assembly line – was completed with no technical issues surfacing.

We have a photo to share of the first batch of LEGENDs off the assembly line. This is an exciting “family photo” of sorts, and as you can see, the units are powered up.

The first batch of LEGEND devices, straight from the assembly line.

The next thing we’d like to share is a video showing a portion of the hand-assembled components in the factory. The hand-assembled portion of LEGEND involves the housing and the installation of the screen, cameras, microphone, and speaker.

Note: The printed circuit board assembly, or PCBA, is assembled by machines and tested by machines during the assembly process. Due to some of the proprietary nature of the device, we’re not showing that part of the assembly.

You could call this “burying the lede,” but we like to think of it as a reward for reading the entire update:

The testing is complete.

The assembly line performs as expected and without issue.

All components have been purchased and are in the process of being delivered.

Let’s make some LEGENDs!

Every effort of this program is now targeted squarely on delivering your LEGEND in February. Like everyone in the motorsports industry, we are keenly aware of the DAYTONA 500 weekend on February 16-18 (six weeks from today), and our focus is on that deadline.

It’s been a long journey to get to this point. We sincerely thank each and every one of you for believing in this project and backing the effort, and we look forward to improving your fan experience with LEGEND!

LEGEND Update: January 5, 2018

Happy New Year to all our LEGEND backers.  We hope you had an enjoyable holiday season and are looking forward to an incredible 2018.  Given the holiday, our two week update will be delayed by three days,  but we will have that posted by end of day Friday.

We will talk to you soon.

Next Update Will Be Posted By Friday

In our December 5 Backer Update, we discussed three areas of improvement:

We are happy to report we have improved the quality of scanner through the testing of the past two weeks, and it is now operating at a level we are quite pleased with.

The antenna pattern has been optimized and it passed our tests. We also made a small mechanical modification that corrected the issue with the proximity sensor.

In the last Backer Update, we also discussed the process of producing our first 60 beta units of LEGEND. Those units have been assembled and are now being used for extended-use testing (considerably longer than the length of a normal race event) and for certification purposes. We anticipate no issues in that testing, but we do want to make sure the device performs flawlessly time and time again, beyond the normal use case that is a race day.

The parts procurement for the initial run of 500 LEGEND units – YOUR LEGEND UNITS – is complete and all components will be in our possession by mid-January. That means we can begin production once our extended testing concludes.

The second, and larger, production run of LEGEND will number 4,000 units, and those parts will arrive at the beginning of February.

We have filed for the trademark of LEGEND and we are acquiring all the proper IMEI and Bluetooth codes and clearances. These are taking place at the same time as the extended-use testing.

To address a couple of questions we have received over the course of this Kickstarter program related to event activations and your Backer benefits, here are two benefits exclusive to our Kickstarter Backers who purchased a LEGEND device ($299 or more):

LEGEND Update: December 19, 2017

In the last update, we outlined two next steps: (1) USB review and (2) scanner testing.  The LEGEND project development team reports the USB review was completed with no significant issues to report.

The scanner testing covers two areas - audio and video.  The FanVision video performance was completed with no issues to report, and our team is very happy with the performance of the video on the device.

The FanVision audio scanner is performing in the acceptable range (meaning at a level equal to the existing FanVision Gen3 controller), however, we expect a couple of tests over the coming week with a different valued filter will increase that audio performance to the level we desire to achieve with LEGEND.  This is a minor tweak to maximize performance, not an issue that is slowing our progress.

In addition to those updates, the following are all boxes that were successfully checked over the last two weeks that nearly complete the pre-production checklist:

Two things that require minor tweaks from the litany of tests that occurred:

Now, I hope you've all stuck with us to this point in the update, because we've got some very cool news to share with you ...

We have begun our production of 60 LEGEND beta units to fine tune the processes for the full production run.  This is going on at the same time as we perform the minor tweaks outlined above.  This is a significant milestone in the overall developmental timeline because serves as the final check of the assembly line to ensure we have a smooth production run when we "flip the switch."

LEGEND Backer Update - December 5

FanVision CTO Jean Arseneau is presently in China with the local development team to review some of the final major phases of the pre-production of LEGEND.  He is scheduled to remain there until the weekend to oversee several key elements outlined below.

ONGOING EFFORTS

1. Finalizing data collection module for the device.

2. PCBA Version 2 software load is occurring today and testing begins. Two weeks of testing and if all goes as expected, there will be no need for a Version 3.

ONGOING EFFORTS REPORT

1. Completed.

2. The basic software was loaded to the device without issue. Proprietary software load is scheduled to be completed Friday.

NEXT STEPS

1. USB review is scheduled for Friday.

2. Scanner testing ongoing, with next milestone review scheduled for Friday.

Additionally, Arseneau noted an onsite test of the FanVision receiver yielded results that exceeded his expectations for signal strength and video clarity.

Once testing indicates the PCBA and all internal components are functioning exactly as expected, the procurement of those identical elements will begin, which leads to the production stage for LEGEND.

The process has been steady, exacting and uncompromising, and that will be reflected in the final product.  As we've admitted and some of you have noted, delivery of LEGEND has exceeded the timeline represented in the graphic from the original Kickstarter proposal.  And like many of our counterparts who bring projects to Kickstarter, we believe in getting it right, even when that extends the projected timeline.  We sincerely appreciate your support, enthusiasm, and patience, as well as the feedback (both the positive and passionate kinds).

For those who viewed the last update and the video of the LEGEND prototype in-use at the NASCAR Cup Series event at Texas Motor Speedway, you may have noticed the look of the FanVision user interface for NASCAR.  To give you a clearer look at what you can expect, here are a number of screens you can expect to encounter in the experience.

LEGEND Backer Update - November 7

Welcome to the bi-weekly LEGEND Kickstarter Backer update. As a reminder, we are presenting our progress in the following manner:

1. Recap status of the topics discussed in the previous update.

2. Provide information on each of those action items.

3. Tell you what we’re working on next.

ONGOING EFFORTS (FROM SEPTEMBER 25 UPDATE)

1. We have released the preproduction model of Version 2 of the PCBA. The PCBA is the process of connecting the electronics components with the wirings of printed circuit boards. The printed circuit boards themselves are pathways created by metallic insertions allowing electricity to flow smoothly and efficiently reach the components within the device. The PCBA should be ready in two weeks.

2. Field testing the FanVision receiver (expected to last two weeks).

3. Field testing the scanner receiver (expected to continue three weeks).

4. Over-The-Air (OTA) validation for the scanner.

5. Scanner power management

ONGOING EFFORTS REPORT

1. Completed – PCB for Version 2 is done. We are going into production with 20 prototypes of Version 2 of LEGEND on Sunday, October 15.

2. Completed – Field testing for the FanVision receiver was quite successful. Improvement is in the 3-6 dB range, and while those numbers may not mean much to the layperson, in our world the numbers are quite simple … we have improved the quality of the FanVision experience on LEGEND over the existing FanVision Gen3 controller. This means we have enhanced the coverage area for the device, using the existing transmission system.

3. Still in process – As of this moment, we have increased the signal 1 dB over the RE1000 scanner. This is good, but we would like to deliver more in this area.

4. Still in process.

5. Completed – The integration of the power management for the receiver is successfully done.

NEXT STEPS (WE WILL REPORT ON THESE IN OCTOBER 25 UPDATE)

1. The integration of the activation module is 50% complete at this time

2. The LEGEND launcher (home page for all scanner and FanVision launch points, essentially) is on schedule for integration on October 27

LEGEND Backer Update - September 26

Welcome to the latest LEGEND Backer Update. Before we get into the technical aspects of this update – and there are many – we’d like to go over a couple of promises Racing Electronics is making to you.

First of all, and as we stated in the last update, we understand you are all very eager to receive your LEGEND and put it through the paces at your favorite motorsports venues across the country. We feel the same way. You will receive updates from Racing Electronics every two weeks moving forward. We do our best to be transparent to our customers and to provide more project updates than anyone on Kickstarter.

Moving forward, we’d like to present our progress in the following manner:

The goal here is to show you as projects are checked off, one-by-one, until we reach the one that says “LEGEND ready to ship to Kickstarter Backers.”

So let’s jump into it. The items we discussed in the last installment of the LEGEND Backer Update on August 11 were:

SOFTWARE

1. Optimization of the power management for FanVision receiver and scanner

2. Antenna management between FanVision receiver and scanner

HARDWARE

1. Calibration of the audio level for the scanner

2. Review of all peripherals (cameras, speaker, microphone, touchscreen, …)

3. UHF antenna review and test report

TEST REVIEWS

1. Review all tests on antenna for 3G/4G, WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth

2. Production process and test fixtures

CORRECTIVE

1. Optimization of the Linux driver to support the FanVision receiver

2. Review of the USB modes (On The Go / Host / Slave)

3. Interconnection between the FanVision audio manager and Android audio manager

Following FanVision Chief Technical Officer Jean Arseneau’s visit to the overseas production facility, the following are the updates on each item:

SOFTWARE REPORT

1. Complete - We have full control of the power management for the FanVision receivers.

2. Complete - All systems checked out positive on antenna management between FanVision receiver and scanner.

HARDWARE REPORT

1. Incomplete - Progress was good. To get to the desired audio level and quality we will be adding a filter to the PCBA.

2. Complete - All peripherals are working properly.

3. Incomplete - Performance of the UHF antenna was below expectations. The problem is correctable and is scheduled to be addressed in the next round of development.

TEST REVIEWS REPORT

1. Complete - All tests resulted in positive findings. All these systems are a go.

2. Complete - Agreed to the fixtures needed for mass production and the equipment is already secure.

CORRECTIVE REPORT

1. Incomplete - Linux driver has been optimized. We can run the FanVision application using all low-level drivers. There is a small, correctable, instability we are correcting that occurs when a user powers on LEGEND with the first time the FanVision device is launched.

2. Incomplete - The On-The-Go (OTG) mode required for the FanVision receiver could not be enabled. Resolution planned for next round of evaluations by integrating a new version of the printed circuit board assembly (PCBA).

3. Complete - Successful tests of the FanVision audio manager and the Android manager. So that brings us to the here and now, and here is a status update for the LEGEND project.

ONGOING EFFORTS & NEXT STEPS

1. The revised schematic and updated PCBA layout for the next version of LEGEND.

2. Developing the prototype of the audio filter needed to adjust the level and quality, as well as OTG management. Will be a wire wrap on the printed circuit board.

3. Reproduction of the UHF antenna.

4. Integration of the power management for the FanVision receivers in the FanVision applications (NASCAR, NHRA, Red Bull Global Rallycross).

5. Review of the raw material sourced for the first production run, including the new parts.

We look forward to chatting with you again in two weeks. Keep the questions, comments and dialogue coming.
