Facile fabrication of novel ZnO/CoMoO4 nanocomposites: Highly efficient visible-light-responsive photocatalysts in degradations of different contaminants

Source:Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology A: Chemistry, Volume 363 Author(s): Mahsa Pirhashemi, Aziz Habibi-Yangjeh A facile route was adopted to fabricate p-n heterojunction ZnO/CoMoO4 photocatalysts through a refluxing method followed by calcination process. The resulting ZnO/CoMoO4 nanocomposites were characterized by means of XRD, EDX, FESEM, HRTEM, XPS, UV–vis DRS, FT-IR, BET, and PL techniques. The photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B was chosen to investigate photocatalytic performances. Compared to the reference materials of ZnO and CoMoO4, the ZnO/CoMoO4 nanocomposites showed much higher photocatalytic activity and the ZnO/CoMoO4 (30%) sample possessed the highest efficiency, which is 19.6 and 6.26 folds greater relative to the ZnO and CoMoO4, respectively. The results demonstrated that the p-n heterojunction between ZnO and CoMoO4 could significantly boost the photocatalytic efficiency through highly promoted separation of electron/hole pairs as well as extended absorption to visible light. Finally, the highly enhanced performances of the ZnO/CoMoO4 (30%) nanocomposite in removal of three more organic pollutants including methylene blue, methyl orange, and fuchsine were confirmed, which indicates the potential of this nanocomposite for practical applications.

WO3 nanospheres with improved catalytic activity for visible light induced cross dehydrogenative coupling reactions

The as-synthesized tungsten oxides were screened as photocatalysts for visible-light-driven cross dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reactions along with commercially available WO3-W4. Pulse reverse co-electrodeposition of polyaniline-tungsten oxide nanocomposite onto TiO2 nanotubes/Ti plate and evaluation of plate's photocatalytic activity

Source:Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology A: Chemistry, Volume 361 Author(s): Masoud Faraji, Amir Abedini Binder-free PANI-WO3/TiO2NTs/Ti plates with enhanced photocatalytic activity were facilely fabricated via pulse reverse co-electrodeposition of polyaniline and tungsten oxide onto the previously formed TiO2 nanotubes/Ti plates. The SEM results of the plates showed that PANI-WO3 nanocomposite is dispersed on surface of TiO2 nanotubes. The electrochemical investigations indicated the high photoresponse, facile electron transfer kinetic and fast photogenerated charge separation efficiency of PANI-WO3/TiO2NTs/Ti plate. The photocatalytic degradation experiments demonstrated that PANI-WO3/TiO2NTs/Ti plates exhibit superior photocatalytic activities for degradation of Methylene Orange (MO) dye when compared to bare TiO2NTs/Ti, PANI/TiO2NTs/Ti and WO3/TiO2NTs/Ti plates. The synergetic effect among PANI, WO3 and TiO2 nanotubes motivated a slow electron–hole recombination as well as a fast charge separation, thus increasing the photocatalytic activity of the PANI-WO3/TiO2NTs/Ti plate. The reusable modified plate has good photocatalytic stability and can be recycled 4 times with only gradual loss of activity.

Refat The present work aimed to prepare elastic polymer slices that have semiconductors properties for use in solar cells based on charge transfer (CT) complexation. For this purpose, first six derivatives of 1,8–naphthalimide fluorescent dyes were synthesized. Secondly, the synthesized fluorescent dyes were complexed with p–chloranil acceptor via CT interaction in methanol solvent. The obtained CT complexes were dispersed in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrixes using methylene chloride solvent at room temperature. The obtained polymer sheets were characterized by several spectroscopic and physicochemical techniques, such as IR and UV–vis spectroscopies; and SEM technique. The microstructural and morphological changes occurred in the sheets of the PMMA matrix blended with the CT products were observed using the positron annihilation Doppler broadening (PADB) and the positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) techniques. Finally, the photostability and the direct current (DC) electrical characteristics as a function of the temperature for the CT products dispersed in PMMA matrixes have been studied.

A new “ON-OFF” fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensor based on 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivative for the detection of Cu2+ ions

The synthesized compound displayed “On-Off” fluorescent sensing towards Cu2+ with high selectivity and sensitivity. Fluorescence and UV–vis absorbance spectra studies demonstrated that the proposed sensor can detect Cu2+ directly in acetonitrile solution over a wide range of metal ions including Ag+, Na+, K+, Hg2+, Mg2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Fe2+, Pb2+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Ba2+, Fe3+, Al3+, and Cr3+. The thermal and photochemical reactions accompanying metal ion-induced transformation of spiropyrans 1A to the complexes formed by their photoinduced merocyanine isomers 1B were investigated. In the dark, the colorless spiropyrans interact with Mn2+, Cd2+ and Zn2+ transition metal ions to yield deeply colored 1:1 complexes possessing fluorescence, while Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+ ions prefer to form non-fluorescent complexes with two merocyanines. Under irradiation with visible light solutions of the merocyanine-metal complexes undergo photobleaching. This effect was quantified using photokinetic method.

A novel diarylethene-based photoswitchable chelator for reversible release and capture of Ca2+ in aqueous media

This RPC is constituted of a photochromic diarylethene core connected on one side to a BAPTA (1,2-bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid) calcium chelator and, on the other side, to an electron-withdrawing group. The operation principle consists in photoswitching on and off an intramolecular charge transfer between one nitrogen atom of the BAPTA moiety and the electron-withdrawing group, thereby modulating the chelating affinity of BAPTA for calcium ions. Solubility of the compound in a partially aqueous solvent was achieved by grafting a short PEG (polyethylene glycol) tail to the electron-withdrawing group. A reduction of the affinity for calcium ions upon photoswitching by a factor of 3–4, in the hundred nM range of dissociation constant, is reported and constitutes a proof of concept of this type of RPC.

Bias potential role in degradation of methyl orange in photocatalytic process

In this study a novel photoelectrocatalytic reactor with large specific surface area was designed and constructed to evaluate photocatalytic activity of the plates under different conditions. Sensitivity analysis was performed for effective parameters including deposition time, initial concentration and bias potential. Based on experimental results, applying bias potential has major impact on photocatalytic process. In optimum operating conditions, photoelectrocatalytic degradation rate increased about 35% compared to photocatalytic process.

Photophysical features of naphthols having esters, formyl and acetyl groups and the difluoroboronated complex in solution and the solid state

We converted compound 1b to the corresponding difluoroboronated (BF2) complex 2b, and investigated the photophysical features in solution and the solid state along with those of the related compound 1d. The other compounds 1a, 1c and 1d were unsuccessful in forming the corresponding BF2 complexes. Blue fluorescence from compounds 1a, 1b and 1d and yellow one from compound 2b in the solid state were recorded. Compounds 1a, 1b and 1d moderately fluoresced with quantum yields of ca. 0.2 in both solution and solid state. Compound 2b showed fluorescence in the solid state with a quantum yield of 0.18 and in solution with a quantum yield of 0.65. The present study introduces potentials of ESIPT molecules, the related compounds and the corresponding difluoroboronated complexes to solid-state fluorophores.

Photochromism of dihydroindolizines. Part XXIV: Exploiting “Click” chemistry strategy in the synthesis of fluorenyldihydroindolizines with multiaddressable photochromic properties

Abourehab A new category of photochromic dihydroindolizines (DHIs) incorporating substituted 2,7- and 4-substituted tetrazole and oxadiazole moieties in the fluorene skeleton (region A) were efficiently prepared utilizing “Click” chemistry approaches. The structure elucidation for all synthesized precursors as well as the target photochromic DHIs was carried out using some analytical and spectroscopic techniques. A highly tunable photochromic behaviors of the parent dihydroindolizine are possible by the introduction of substituents in different positions of the DHI framework. For example, the substituents in 2,7 and 4-positions of fluorene part showed the ability for extending photochromism. The photochromic behaviors of photochromic DHIs substituted in fluorene part (region A) such as the reaction kinetics and fluorescence properties and their photo-fatigue resistance were studied. It has been disclosed that the replacement of the tetrazole moieties in 2,7-position in (region A) by oxadiazole moieties has strong effect on both the spectral, kinetic characteristics, fluorescence emission and photostability. The observations of this work imply that the substituent groups in the fluorene part influenced the thermal back-reaction rates and played an imperative role in controlling all photochromic properties of the open form. The new synthesized substituted (DHIs) in the fluorene by both tetrazole moieties in 2,7-position and by oxadiazole moieties in 2,7 and 4 positions in fluorene part made these materials act as fluorophores and postulate new opportunities for the design of the next generation of photochromic materials which will make it talented materials in many applications such as electronic smart materials, photochromic glasses, photonic devices and fluorescent fabrics. Because of their noticeable fluorescence emission high photostability, these materials can be used as fluorophores, recording or storage information for numerous periods without color fading.
